Library Associate (Full Time) - Cambridge Branch Job at Dorchester County Public Library
POSITION: Library Associate (Cambridge)
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Works under the supervision of the Head of the Information Department. Performs the duties of a department member including but not limited to reference services, Inter-Library Loan, programming, subject material display and promotion, technical processing of materials, weeding and inventorying of the Library’s collections, and building security and public safety.
Examples of Typical Tasks:
- Assists the public by answering their requests for information including but not limited to assisting the public in their selection of material in all formats including electronic and web-based, and providing support to library users in their use of computer software and equipment.
- May perform Circulation Desk duties including but not limited to checking library materials in and out, issuing borrowers cards, assisting in maintaining records of circulated materials and patron accounts.
- Answers the telephone in a courteous manner, directs inquiries to appropriate departments, takes accurate messages, and assists patrons in their use of the public photocopier. May assist in shelving library materials, weeding and inventorying collection.
- Assists with general library program planning and implementation, and for publicity and promotion of those programs as well as the marketing of general library services. Assists in special projects and grant activities as assigned.
- May assist in developing, planning, promoting, and implementing programs of community interest for teens and/or adults. May assist in the development and implementation of surveys, plans, policies, and promotions relating to the provision of library service. May assist in the development and implementation of grants in support of adult services.
- May substitute at Hurlock Branch Library as assigned.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and must complete Library Associate Certification within 2 years of hire. Once completed, the Library Associate must complete 90 clock (or contact) hours of approved library in-service training or 9 hours formal academic work in library science every 5 years to maintain certification.
Also required are:
- Strong written and verbal communications skills
- Experience using computers including MS Office, e-mail, using the Internet, and ability to operate office equipment
- Ability to determine reliable resources
- General clerical skills
- Excellent customer service and inter-personal skills
- Ability to accurately handle and record cash receipts
- Ability to work independently as well as with others
Special consideration will be given to candidates with public library experience, including the use of integrated library systems, completion of reference service training, excellent technological skills (troubleshooting, 3D printing, etc.) and programming experience.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Primary work site is the Cambridge Branch Library. Some travel to professional meetings and workshops is required.
Equipment: Must be able to use and/or operate equipment including but not limited to a multi-line telephone, fax machine, fully loaded book cart, passenger elevator, photocopier, personal computer, calculator, circulation equipment, and be able to lift 25 pounds.
Hours: 35 hours per week, including one late evening and alternating Fridays/Saturdays. An example would be: Monday 10-6, Tuesday 9-5, Wednesday 10-6, Thursday 12-8, and alternating Fridays (10-6) and Saturdays (9-5) Flexibility regarding hours is important.
