The Logan Community Organizer (LCO) is a full-time exempt position. The LCO is committed to environmental, social and racial justice and must have organizing experience with a minimum of 4 years in campaign or community organizing. This position requires base building that cultivates strong community member leadership and ownership in environmental justice work through community engagement, developing supporters, members, and the Community Action Team (CAT) in Barrio Logan. The LCO will engage CAT, members and supporters in leadership development, and facilitate community participation in the decision-making process. The LCO coordinates organizing efforts that include social media outreach and campaign strategic planning in Barrio Logan and Logan Heights with support of Barrio Logan Promotoras, Barrio Logan Advocate and other EHC staff. The LCO supervises Barrio Logan Promotoras and other staff who are engaged in the core community activities and maintains an organizing network. This position will also support other organizing efforts such as voter and civic engagement and regional efforts to achieve environmental justice.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conduct community outreach including door knocking, presentations, phone banking, and community event participation to organize community members in Logan campaigns and base
- Develop and implement Barrio Logan Organizing and Base Building plan that engages over 200 people in Barrio Logan environmental justice work
- Build and maintain regular engagement and participation of a 30 member Community Action Team (CAT)
- Ensure member and leader recruitment goals are achieved for Logan campaigns as well as climate, transportation and air quality campaigns
- Attend regular Organizer Team and Campaign meetings, trainings and professional development opportunities
- Play a key role in the development of strategic plans and ensure alignment of organizing work with the strategic plans
- Facilitate coordination of organizing needs across regional campaigns
- Participate in public hearings, networking and other events to secure policy outcomes to accomplish EHC and Barrio Logan & Logan Heights campaign objectives
- Regularly facilitate community participation in the decision-making processes such as key hearings and meetings
- Work with members to develops leadership skills and to take on leadership positions including the Barrio Logan Community Planning group and the AB 617 Portside Community Steering Committee
- Coordinate and lead mobilizations among Organizing Team and across communities
- Represent EHC and the community with media, government agencies and allied organizations
- Support the development of social media and communications strategy and outreach
- Supervise Barrio Logan Promotoras and other staff as needed, ensuring timesheets are completed and work plans are developed to meet goals
- Identify Logan allies to collaborate with and manage their participation to advance campaign work as needed
- Support overall EHC work including voter empowerment efforts, Healthy Homes program and regional climate justice, land use, air pollution, transportation and environmental justice in San Diego
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:
- 3 years' experience in grassroots organizing.
- Demonstrated commitment to the principles of environmental justice.
- Familiarity with local agencies, municipal governments, and state and local government.
- Ability to explain complex policy and data information in simple terms.
- Excellent facilitation skills.
- Ability to develop leadership and organizing skills of community members and staff.
- Proficient computer programs including Microsoft Office, Outlook, Excel, Power Point.
- Proficient public speaking skills that include use of Power Point, popular education and engagement.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Excellent analytical ability.
- Excellent work plan development and management skills.
- Reliable transportation method (drivers are required to have a valid license and state-mandated liability coverage)
- Ability to work flexible hours..
- Ability to handle multiple tasks, work under pressure, and maintain attention to detail.
- Ability to work within a team environment.
- Must demonstrate the ability to be culturally competent in all respects.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:
- 5-8 years' experience in grassroots, environmental justice and/or social and racial justice organizing.
- Experience conducting policy research; fact-finding and writing.
- Experience working with government agencies and decision-makers in the San Diego region.
- Bilingual strongly preferred (Spanish + English)
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed primarily outdoors in a community setting with occasional office work at a desk on computer and phone; employee regularly walks while operating electronic equipment 4 to 5 hours per day; occasionally lifts, carries and positions objects weighing up to 20 pounds. Must be prepared to work in all kinds of outdoor weather. The position also involves the use of a computer and keyboard, tablet, scanner, telephone, and face-to-face communications; an employee must be able to communicate clearly and professionally in all of these manners. Position may include standing at event tables and walking a neighborhood for several hours on an as-needed basis. The employee may spend periods sitting, standing, or walking. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
Salary Range: $66,560 - 75,400 per year; salary commensurate with experience
The successful completion of a background and reference check are pre-requisites for employment.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Covid-19 Vaccination-Booster/Testing:
EHC requires all personnel to maintain up-to-date vaccinations and obtain any supplemental booster shots, if available and not medically contraindicated or have an approved exemption. We require personnel to certify that they have obtained the necessary immunizations and maintain a copy of that certification, which must be provided at our request. If an employee does not receive vaccinations/boosters and receives an exemption from this policy, they will be required to obtain regular and appropriate testing to certify non-infection.
