    Job Objective:

    Plan, implement, evaluate, and manage differentiated curriculum and instructional strategies to address the individual needs of students enrolled in the special education program. Present appropriate learning experiences consistent with the school district’s mission and mandated requirements. Provide personalized direction and support to help students realize their intellectual, social, and vocational potentials. Actively involve parents and colleagues as learning partners.


    Minimum Qualifications:

    • A valid State of Ohio teaching certificate or license as Intervention Specialist (Mild to Moderate)
    • Evidence of a clear record as determined by the Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation (BCII) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
    • (Highly Qualified) HQ status in core content areas for grades 7-12 preferred.


    Job Duties, Responsibilities,

    and Essential Functions:

    • Perform all assigned duties according to the policies, rules, and regulations of the Kirtland Board of Education and the Ohio Department of Education/Special Education Division. Comply with all Federal mandates as they apply to students with disabilities.
    • Demonstrate subject matter competence and teaching proficiency.
    • Determine the educational needs of the students based on all applicable sources (e.g., standardized tests, psychological assessments, teachers’ synopses, student records, etc.).
    • Employ the requisite components and information necessary to provide an effective Individualized Educational Program (I.E.P.) for each student consistent with mandated requirements. Apply the information in the student’s I.E.P. to prepare and carry out daily lesson plans (i.e., written clearly, usable, and sequential). Ensure the learning process is guided toward the basic core program for students with disabilities.
    • Consult with Curriculum Coordinator/Director of Special Education regarding instructional modifications, classroom adjustments, and/or other methods that support the attainment of educational goals for students enrolled in the program. Secure necessary supplies to implement the educational plan.
    • Document student progress. Provide ongoing communication with teachers to support academic congruence with classroom goals and objectives.
    • Work cooperatively with the school staff (e.g., Director of Special Education, Speech/Language Pathologist, Psychologist, Physical and Occupational Therapist, etc.).

    • Provide career information. Help students develop positive work behavior and attitudes. Assist with job placement (i.e., high school level).
    • Prepare attendance records and reports required by law, board policy, or those requested by the Superintendent and/or his or her designees. Ensure the confidentiality of privileged information.
    • Make recommendations to the principal concerning future placements. Participate in annual review conferences.
    • Help communicate school rules to students. Maintain high standards for student conduct and enforce discipline according to classroom/school policy and the due process rights of students. Employ techniques that motivate students to establish appropriate short- and long-term goals. Provide positive reinforcement to acknowledge acceptable behavior. Consistently confront undesirable behavior firmly and fairly.
    • Promote the proper care of school property, equipment, textbooks, supplies, and other materials. Account for school resources used by students.
    • Attempt to develop rapport and maintain the confidence of parents and students. Provide periodic progress reports to parents using telephone calls, notes, interim reports, report cards, and conferences, etc.
    • Share in the responsibility for authorized committee work, when requested. Suggest equipment or teaching techniques that will enhance the educational process.
    • Prepare the assigned classroom at the beginning of the year. Retrieve inventory of supplies and equipment as required. Store equipment and supplies at the end of the school year.
    • Participate in after school programs (e.g., open house, parent conferences, etc.). Voluntarily support parent organization activities as time permits.
    • Participate in professional growth activities (e.g., professional associations, course work, workshops, seminars, etc.) Share knowledge with colleagues.
    • Model life-long learning to staff and students.
    • Serve as a role model for students. Demonstrate responsibility, citizenship, respect, and courtesy.
    • Perform other duties, as directed.


    Physical and Mental Abilities Required:

    • Ability to move freely throughout the building.
    • Ability to lift, carry, or move equipment or supplies weighing up to twenty pounds.
    • Ability to work with young children in activities that may require stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling.
    • Ability to communicate effectively using language and writing skills.
    • Ability to maintain a non-punitive relationship with students and demonstrate fairness and patience while respecting their confidences.
    • Ability to facilitate the exchange of ideas leading to a group consensus.

    • Ability to react productively to frequent interruptions and changing conditions.
    • Ability to organize and complete tasks efficiently with minimal supervision.
    • Ability to maintain a tactful disposition in dealing with administrators, staff, students, parents, and the public.


    Supervisory Responsibility:

    • Under the direction of the Principal and the Director of Special Education: schedule work assignments, provide instructions, trains, and communicates expectations to Educational Aides, student teachers, and volunteers, when assigned.


    Working Conditions:

    • Occasional exposure to blood, body fluids, and tissue.
    • Occasional interaction with agitated or upset parents/public.
    • Frequent interaction with disruptive or unruly children.
    • Frequent exposure to student commotion.
    • Work under stress to meet schedules and deadlines.
    • Work cooperatively with others.
    • Considerable paperwork is required.
    • Duties may require occasional work during the evening and/or weekend.
