Job Overview: The Facility Maintenance & IT Technician performs general maintenance duties for the American Jewish Archives (AJA) building and grounds which reside on the campus of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion and provides assistance as needed, to the AJA’s staff and visitors as necessary.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Conducting routine inspections of premises and equipment.- Performing preventative maintenance.
- Handling basic repairs and maintenance.
- Contacting and overseeing contractors when professional repairs are necessary.
- Troubleshoots and repairs equipment and physical structures as necessary.
- Starts devices/equipment to test their performance and performs machine adjustments.
- Dismantles devices (electrical/mechanical) to locate and repair/replace defective parts.
- Operates and maintains electronic classrooms with video conferencing equipment
- Assists with computer setup
- Assists with programming and monitoring security systems at the AJA
- Basic plumbing & electrical
- Change and stock a variety of different lightbulbs and ballasts located throughout the AJA
- Grounds maintenance and basic snow removal (clearing of sidewalks and entranceways)
- Exterior/ Interior painting and caulking,
- Complete light drywall repair
- Setup of rooms including moving tables, chairs, microphones, speakers, etc. for programs and events
- Assists archivists with receipt and shipment of boxes relating to the collection of the AJA
- Processes mail and transport mail to post office on a daily basis
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Proven maintenance experience
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
- Related degree from a technical college.
- Experience in working with computers and IT equipment
- Experience in working with HVAC systems
- Previous work in a school/college setting preferred
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES):
Skilled in the use of hand and power tools such as hammers, saws, drills and wrenches- Ability to dismantle machines, equipment, or devices to remove and replace defective parts
- Ability to check and maintain files relating to the AJA facility, repair manuals, parts catalogs, etc.
- Experience with precision measuring instruments or electronic testing devices
- Experience performing routine maintenance
- Strong organizational and follow up skills
- Eye for detail
- Professional presentation and attitude
- Ability to maintain focus while working individually
- Must be able to work effectively in a team environment
- Must exhibit strong technical and operational skills
- Demonstrate a high level of personal accountability, work autonomously / with little direction
- Proficient in proper use and safety procedures for the AJA facilities
- Must have basic computer knowledge
- Must be able to lift boxes and move furniture for setups
- Understands and maintains the AJA’s security systems
WORKING CONDITION: The working environment is similar to that of a regular office, with frequent conversational communication with college officials, teachers, staff, students, and outside suppliers, as well as the opportunity to input and retrieve data and written messages in an electronic format in a timely way. This is a "working supervisor" job, and the person in it may be relied upon to not only plan and lead but also to engage in many of the department's duties, from analyzing system faults to aiding with the installation of sophisticated equipment. As a result, certain visual and physical dexterity is necessary, such as the ability to visually identify equipment, parts, and connections, as well as aid in the moving of fragile goods weighing up to 30 pounds. Bending, lifting, a wide range of arm movement, finger and hand dexterity, and even climbing and working from ladders or lifting equipment are all part of the job. Some equipment setup, maintenance, or assessment may require working in areas with limited movement. This person may have access to sensitive and highly confidential material from time to time and must preserve and enforce tight secrecy as needed.
