Maintenance Planner Scheduler
Position Summary
The maintenance planner / scheduler supports the plant maintenance group by developing job plans and advanced work schedules. The position requires excellent technical, analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
Reports to Maintenance Manager.
Roles and Responsibility
- Plan future maintenance work, where the work has not yet been started, to reduce potential delays and maximize maintenance workforce “wrench time”. Maintenance supervisor is responsible for co-ordination and support of work that has been started.
- Develop work plans based upon work request and field inspection of the work site, where required (where work plan does not exist for that equipment). Work plans to indicate scope of what work is to be done and identify critical resources required. Skilled trades executing work will determine how the work is to be done.
- Identify and co-ordinate of necessary resources, with sufficient lead time prior to the start of the work to ensure those resources can be scheduled when needed, for effective and efficient execution of the work.
- Necessary resources can include:
- Work scope and job instructions
- Technical information – e.g. drawing, manuals
- MRO parts and materials – e.g. MRO stores, parts / material to be purchased
- Special tools and equipment – e.g. mobile / heavy equipment, precision tools
- Special permitting – e.g. confined space, “hot work”, etc.
- Minimum skill levels and quantity of human resources required – e.g. one mechanic trained in laser alignment, one mechanic trained in rigging and hoisting, one electrician competent in motor installation and setting protection, outside contractor with 10T crane and operator; and Production operating conditions – e.g. equipment to be shutdown, emptied and cleaned of all production material, and locked-out.
- Estimate level of effort (man-hours) required by skill, work duration, and cost of parts and material required.
- Reserve or procure critical parts and materials required, as appropriate (i.e. standard MRO stores item, or purchase item). Arrange staging / kitting of parts and materials, as appropriate.
- Procure required outside services.
- Weekly provide a list of approved and planned maintenance work to be execution the following week. The list of work is to address organizational priorities and to maximize usage of the skills and numbers of resources available to execute the work during that one week period. Maintenance supervisors are responsible for developing daily schedules for the week and assigning resources to execute the work.
- Work Order / Asset Management
- Code and review work requests.
- Review equipment history on approved corrective work orders. Identify situations with repeat failures. Identify problem situations to operations, maintenance, and engineering for resolution.
- Close planned work orders. Review actual work effort required, work duration, and parts and materials used. Review comments provided by those involved in the work. Revise work plans as needed to improve effectiveness of future work.
Required:
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
- Previous experience at the Journeyman level in Maintenance
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Products (Word, Excel, Outlook)

- Previous Maintenance Planner/Scheduler experiences
- Experience with work management systems (SAP)
- Ability to effectively track/trend data to implement effective PM program
