Maintenance Technician/Custodian - Chinle Instructional Site Job at Navajo Technical University

JOB PURPOSE:

Performs basic preventive maintenance, housekeeping, groundskeeping, and repair on buildings, equipment, and facilities. Maintains standards of cleanliness, sanitation, and freedom from hazards in buildings and grounds.

JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Sweeps, cleans, mops, scrubs, waxes, and dust floors.
  • Cleans, disinfects and sanitizes classrooms, chalkboards, buildings, hotel rooms, and offices.
  • Cleans toilets, basins, showers, bathtubs, and scrubs walls; restocks restroom supplies; washes windows; dust, cleans, and vacuums furniture, fixtures doors, and related furnishings by using appropriate cleaning supplies.
  • Empties trash receptacles and bags of trash for proper disposal.
  • Cleans parking lots and ensures outside trash cans are regularly emptied.
  • Performs a wide variety of basic maintenance and preventative maintenance tasks, requiring skills in the trades of carpentry, painting, electrical, plumbing, heating and cooling, and cleaning duties.
  • Maintains and cleans all assigned areas within the physical structure of the buildings and campus, outside grounds, parking areas, and public areas space.
  • Installs fixtures, appliances, tiles, windows, doors, and cabinetry according to manufacturer specifications.
  • Changing light bulbs and fixtures.
  • Follows and maintains a preventive maintenance schedule for all properties and equipment.
  • Receives work assignments via work orders; executes assignments, and returns completed work orders as directed.
  • Notifies management concerning the need for major repairs or additions to lighting, heating, ventilating, and equipment.
  • Inspects and performs minor maintenance on equipment and tools. Refers major repairs to Supervisor.
  • Moves furniture, equipment, or fixtures as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School Diploma preferred.
  • One year of maintenance and custodial experience.
  • CPR/First Responder Certification preferred.
  • Building maintenance certification preferred.
  • Boiler Operators License or skill trade license preferred.
  • Valid state driver's license.
  • Must be able to pass a background check, with NO prior convictions of any felonies.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Knowledge of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for HAZMAT.
  • Knowledge of the methods and practices used in cleaning, preventive maintenance, and repair work.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and applicable safety practices.
  • Skill in the safe operation of power tools, light equipment, and shop equipment.
  • Skill in the use of cleaning tools, chemicals, cleaners, and disinfectants.
  • Ability to interact and maintain good working relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in the Navajo and English language.
  • Ability to safely use cleaning products and safely operate cleaning equipment.
  • Ability to use hand tools and electrical tools.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to learn the methods of cleaning and caring for buildings, grounds, and equipment.
  • Ability to work as a team member in a structured working environment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to stand for prolonged periods, walk and sit.
  • Occasionally crawl, climb heights, reach above shoulders, crouch, kneel, balance, and push/pull.
  • Use hands for the dexterity of motion, and repetitive movement of both hands.
  • Have normal auditory, and visual acuity, and verbal communications skills.
  • The employee must frequently carry up to 50 pounds. Occasionally lift 75 - 100 lbs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Work is generally performed in an office setting and an outdoor environment.
  • Standing and walking may be on uneven surfaces or unstable ground.
  • Aware of situations where safety-toe shoes, safety goggles, gloves, protective face shields, or hard hats are needed may occur.
  • Exposure to dust, chemicals, bloodborne pathogens, variances in temperature, and equipment with moving parts.
  • Exposure to natural weather conditions, various specks of dust and mists, and normal debris and hazards common at sites may occur while performing outdoor duties.
  • May be subject to loud noises, electric shock, bruises, cuts, broken bones, insect and rodent bites, fumes, smoke, and airborne contaminants.
  • Tight time constraints and multiple demands are common.
  • Evening and/or weekend work may be required. Extended hours and irregular shifts may be required.
