The Department of Public Works is recruiting for a full-time Maintenance Worker II. The individuals selected will work in the Public Works Department. A Maintenance Worker II performs journey-level tasks of more than ordinary difficulty. An employee in this class must be able to perform heavy physical labor safely and efficiently. The Laborer II class differs from Laborer I in that tasks require a greater degree of skill and knowledge of departmental operations. Laborers work under the immediate supervision of a lead worker or Senior Crew Leaders who lays out the details of each specific assignment and constantly checks the work in process and upon completion; or performs routine tasks independently after initial instruction. An incumbent in this class may assist other Maintenance Workers and Equipment Operators I and II in their various tasks.

Illustrative Examples of Work:

  • Assists the Senior Crew Leaders as a member of the crew that performs maintenance functions;
  • Participates in the construction and repair of manholes, catch basins, inlets and junction boxes;
  • Assists in forming, pouring and finishing small areas of concrete;
  • Participates in the construction, repair and/or asphalt patching of streets, concrete and brick sidewalks, curbs and gutter;
  • Participates in the construction and repair of barriers and fences;
  • Operates or assists in the operation of jack hammers, chain saws;
  • Cleans hand and motorized tools and equipment. Clears debris from work area when job completed;
  • Loads trucks with de-icing materials during snow operations. Applies sand and/or brine to icy areas as directed;
  • Inspects, cleans and maintains tools, equipment and vehicles;
  • Cleans and maintains facilities by emptying garbage cans, cleaning up minor spills that occur, cleaning parking lots, gardens, fuel island; interior common areas, and removing and securing surplus supplies and equipment;
  • Assists other crews as needed;
  • Performs related work as required.

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Some knowledge of departmental operations and procedures;
  • ability to perform routine manual work;
  • stamina and ability to lift heavy articles;
  • ability to follow oral or written instructions;
  • physical ability to perform job tasks involving heavy manual labor
  • ability to perform tasks under adverse weather conditions.

Requirements:
Minimum:

  • Completion of high school or vocational school courses;
  • ability to perform heavy manual labor in all types of weather;
  • some knowledge of construction or maintenance activities and the equipment and tools of the trade;
  • three years’ experience in any trade; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • A valid Class B Commercials Driver’s License (CDL).

Preferred:

  • Some knowledge of departmental operations and procedures related to maintenance activities;
  • knowledge of equipment and tools and their safe use and the ability to follow written instructions;
  • two years’ experience as a semi-skilled worker.

Salary & Benefits: Up to $52,862 + depending on qualifications to start. HOURS: 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, plus overtime emergency hours as required.
