POSITION SCOPE
The Operator plays a role in the manufacturing, production and distribution of our malt products, which includes regular sanitation of machinery and equipment. This position is required to follow regulations according to food manufacturing requirements, HACCP, OSHA and company policies. Operators must be able to work 8, 10, or 12 hour schedules on a day, swing or night shift as needed.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Receive steeps for Compartment House from Elevator to holding bin as needed.
- Has a good understanding of the malting process.
- Send Steep from holding bin to steeps as indicated on production schedule.
- Input and monitor steeping regime using moisture targets using excel and Factory Link.
- Ability to load back and take Steep Out moisture and input on production schedule.
- Monitor Germination Temperatures and apply water runs according to recipe.
- Cross trained on both unloading the bed and loading the kiln.
- Load kiln using malt loading equipment in a safe manner.
- Unload compartment using unloading equipment in a safe manner.
- Follow up all jobs with correct sanitation according to JSA forms.
- Ability to input and monitor all aspects of the kilning operation.
- Ability to send SAUS to malt elevator using conveyance automation.
- Perform, document and sign off on all sanitation duties as per Sanitation schedule.
- Conduct themselves according to plant rules and perform tasks in a safe manner according to Job Safety Analysis forms.
- Submit any work-related requests using request forms to Supervisors.
- Follow GWM safety and environmental procedures and policies.
- Perform sanitation duties requested using proper PPE, wearing full face respirator passing a positive fit test.
- Conduct themselves according to plant rules and perform tasks in a safe manner according to Job Safety Analysis forms.
- Communicate any deviation of process, near misses’ safety or environmental to supervisor.
- Communicate to Maintenance any equipment issues related to processes.
- Ability to follow procedures to sample and analyze in process batches to determine if they meet targets.
- Ability to make changes to process parameters after communicating results to supervisor.
- Ability to attend and contribute to tailgate meetings on a regular frequency
SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Standing and walking - three hours continuously and up to eight hours per day.
- Safely operate a wide range of complicated tools and equipment while working on control equipment. This would require the worker to occasionally lift a maximum of
- Able to lift 40lbs to above waist level. Continuous lifting of 10 - 20 pounds is only infrequently required.
- Pushing and pulling with forces up to 60 pounds is required.
- Torque forces of 20 - 30 pounds are frequently required for tightening large bolted assemblies and moving wash hoses.
- Reaching overhead and working in twisted, awkward positions is frequently required in order to access and adjust equipment in place.
- Reaching overhead is required for several minutes at a time when working on equipment from work platforms and catwalks.
- Climbing of ladders and structural supports is required daily.
- Bending, kneeling, and squatting are required, for brief periods, several times per day. Weights do not generally exceed 10 - 20 pounds when performing these functions.
- Working at a computer terminal or laboratory workbench is required.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- High school degree or GED is required. Some technical training is a plus.
- Minimum 2 years of experience operating complex manufacturing process equipment is desired.
- Critical reasoning skills, ability to read, write, perform math calculations on a high school level.
- Must be self-motivated, with an ability to troubleshoot issues and determine appropriate resolution and develop sense of ownership of processes.
- Above average verbal communication skills are required, plus willingness to work in a team environment with peers in various departments and trades.
- Ability to utilize Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel is preferred.
- Malting or brewing industry knowledge and/or experience is a huge plus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Unionized environment. Teamsters Local 983.
- Highly physical position, including walking, sitting, standing, climbing stairs in the plant environment including outdoor work in all seasons during day, swing or night shifts

- Exposure to industrial noise from plant machinery
- Typical Setting: Travel on foot is required throughout the 5-acre plant site, in order to access all operating Malthouses, elevators, and parts storage areas.
- Once inside an operating building the worker is required to access multiple levels using stairs, elevators, ladders, and open Humphrey Man lifts. Approximately 80% of the work is performed indoors, in temperatures ranging from 14 - 22 degrees Celsius. Outdoor work, when required, must be performed in all weather conditions, and at all times of the day and night.
- Environmental Factors: Working conditions in various areas of the plant may expose the worker to mild levels of sulfur dioxide and sodium hypochlorite. Occasional high levels of grain dust and elevated temperatures in the Malthouse kilns are also encountered. Personal protective equipment must be worn during such exposures to mitigate the risks. Exposure to wet and cold conditions during outside work in winter months is infrequently required.
- Hazards: Some exposure to falls, pinch point type injuries, and exposure to respiratory irritants.
