Mammography Technician Job Overview:

  • Operate mammography units to include stereotactic breast biopsy unit.

  • Perform screening and diagnostic mammograms to include tomography, spot compressions and magnification views when necessary. Set up and assist radiologists with needle localization and stereotactic breast biopsy procedures.

  • Print's mammography work schedules/ arrive/depart patients; answer phone/schedule patients for exams; utilize CHCS/HAIMS/MRS.

  • Perform routine diagnostic radiological procedures/services as appropriate.

  • Receive patients explain procedures, and provide appropriate care. Correctly position the patient for the examination and make adjustments necessary for the required examination. Determine if any special patient preparation is required

  • Receive and interpret requests or instructions for mammography exams. Perform daily, monthly, quarterly and annual quality control inspections on all mammography units and monitors. Perform daily warm ups of all mammography units. Maintain mammography film files and hang films for comparison/procedures.

  • Identify abnormalities and determine need for additional mammography views per department protocol (either before or after consulting with department radiologists). Notify physician of significant exams requiring immediate attention.

  • Maintain and clean mammography units and exam room on a regular basis

  • Make minor adjustments on equipment. Differentiate artifacts from normal or pathological processes and recognize electronic equipment limitations. Program the examination equipment. Set up the machine and scanning techniques to be employed. Perform all mammography examinations according to department protocols.

  • Performs administrative duties to include logging in patient information into the mammography tracking system (MRS), schedules and protocols patient exams when necessary, and performs front desk duties when needed. Requests prior images and upload them into the radiology viewing system.

  • Trains new mammography technologists on department equipment and procedures/exam protocols, to include tomography, biopsies and needle localizations.

  • Adhere to radiation safety policies and procedures in accordance with Radiology Department policies and procedures.

  • Send appropriate image series to the radiologist for reading according to MTF protocol.

  • Correctly position the patient for the examination and make technical adjustments necessary for the required examination. Determine if any special patient preparation is required.

  • Process digital images and submit for interpretation by radiologists.

  • Document all procedures and maintain records in accordance with MTF policy.


Mammography Technician Job Qualifications:

  • Graduate from a JRCERT accredited medical mammography training program

  • BLS
  • Computer competency
  • ARRT - Mammography

  • Two (2) years of experience or required performance of 200 exams with the last two (2) years or in the specialty area AND

1. Initial Training in Mammography:

Have at least 40 contact hours of mammography training, including breast anatomy, physiology, positioning, compression, quality assurance/quality control techniques, imaging of patients with breast implants, and the performance of 25 supervised examinations. The actual time spent performing supervised examinations may be included in the 40 hour total. As guidance, however, no more than 12.5 hours of the required 40 should come from the performance of examinations.

2. New Mammographic Modality:

Before a radiologic technologist may independently perform mammographic examinations using any mammographic modality in which the radiologic technologist was not previously trained (e.g., xeromammography, digital mammography, screen-film mammography), the radiologic technologist must have at least 8 hours of training in the modality

3. Continuing Experience:

Have performed a minimum of 200 mammography examinations during the 24 months immediately preceding the date of the facility's annual MQSA inspection, or the last day of the calendar quarter preceding the inspection, or any date in between the two. The beginning date for meeting this requirement is April 28, 1999, or the individual's actual starting date (date on which the individual initially qualifies to work independently), whichever is later. Failure to meet the technologist's continuing experience requirement will not be considered a noncompliance until the later of July 1, 2001, or at least 24 months after the technologist's starting date.

4. Continuing Education:

Have taught or completed at least 15 continuing education units in mammography during the 36 months immediately preceding the date of the facility's annual MQSA inspection, or the last day of the calendar quarter preceding the inspection, or any date in between the two. At least 6 of these CEUs must be in each of the mammographic modalities used by the technologist. CEUs earned through teaching a course can be counted only once towards meeting the units required in any 36-month period.
