Under general supervision, the Marine Program Educator provides support and technical assistance for marine-related educational and research activities. The primary purpose of the Marine Educator position is to assist in conducting outreach through programming and public participation related to stormwater management, water quality, and a variety of environmental and marine-related topics for children and adults. The Educator will assist with a marine science summer camp for children ages 6-14 when needed. Including leading children through various indoor and outdoor activities, including the classroom/building, salt marsh, beach activities, and arts and crafts. The Marine Educator may also lead tours at Asharoken Beach, Northport, to visiting groups, lead courses and labs individually, and prepare and break down daily activities and assigned programs. The Marine Educator will be responsible for preparation before and after programs, including cleaning and care of the facility, animals, and aquaria. All associated camp-related tasks, including supervision of children, paperwork, and creating and teaching environmental and marine-related lessons, are possible. The Educator will assist in public outreach efforts, including rain garden programming, and may assist in other water quality-related activities such as routine laboratory work, data processing, and entry. The Water Quality Educator will work as a team member with existing Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) staff, including stormwater and water quality specialists, educators, and technicians. This position will have a flexible schedule and may include weekend or early evening hours. *Required Qualifications:* * Attendance in or Graduation from a recognized college/university or equivalent. * 21 years or older. * Experience working with children. * Ability to work with children; supervise a group of up to 30 children. * Ability to handle health and safety issues and emergencies. * Ability to lift 50 lbs. * Ability to perform physical requirements of the job, such as light hiking expeditions to the beach, seining, and boat trips. * Ability to work outdoors, sometimes in inclement weather. * Ability to work outdoors performing various types of educational and physical activities. * Ability to learn marine science and natural science subject matter. * Ability to learn and lead educational experiences and activities. * Ability to understand and carry out educational program tasks and objectives. * Ability to work with and touch live animals (marine organisms, fish, reptiles, etc.). * Ability to understand and implement written and oral instructions. * Must be reliable and able to work independently as well as with others. * Good communication and record-keeping skills; understanding and implementing written and oral instructions. * Experience with Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel. * Experience with data entry and analysis. * Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position. * Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as appropriate. *Preferred Qualifications:* * Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, environmental sciences, hydrology, natural resource management, engineering, or other related fields. * Desire to work with children. * Basic marine biology, environmental or education background/aquarium, and animal care experience. * Experience working with GPS devices * Experience using (GIS) Geographic Information Systems * One year experience in stormwater or water quality-related projects preferred * Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification or higher, or equivalent. * Lifeguard Certifications. *Responsibilities/Essential Functions:* *Program Responsibilities:* *Program Delivery – 80%* * Teach the existing educational program as defined. Foster acceptance of programs, methods, and policies to address community and individual needs and consider diverse audiences. Utilizing established materials serves as a subject matter resource in discipline;. Provide standard responses. Interact with program participants. Represent CCE before the public, community leaders, government officials, Cornell, or other land grant universities as part of program delivery. Utilize a variety of proven educational methodologies. * Lead and assist with various marine and environmental science education programs for children-Adults. This will include leading children through various activities both indoors and outdoors during games, learning activities, educational programming, crafts, and nature walks on and off-site. * Aid in educational programming by helping Camp Director with lessons. * Plan and prepare lesson topics, agendas, and scheduled programs to ensure quality programming and activities for participants. *Applied Research – 5%* * May assist in the collection and processing of diagnostic laboratory samples as well as in data collection for other various water quality parameters. *Administrative Responsibilities:* *Coordination/Operation – 10%* * May provide a limited number of routine tasks related to program needs. * May provide low-complexity administrative tasks to support the delivery of established educational program goals. Examples: * May compile, edit, and format existing resources into educational program materials. * May compile, tally, and format evaluation data from program participants based on the existing framework. * May compile, tally and format applied research data based on the existing framework. * May compile, tally, and format program needs assessment data based on the existing framework. * Assist Camp Director with administrative duties. * Set up and maintain the fish tank, including cleaning tanks and filters. * Responsible for preparation before programming and clean-up after programs, including cleaning after crafts and various activities. * Responsible for facility maintenance and care, including cleaning bathrooms, sweeping floors, and maintaining equipment when needed at camp. * At Asharoken Beach, the Educator will help lead children on and off the bus, through lunch, during seining, and remain in the water during swimming activities if needed. * Be present and participate in daily discussions during morning staff meetings at Fuchs (Sea Stars Marine Camp). *Professional Improvement – 5%* * In cooperation with Supervisor and Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and address changes and Association priorities. * Collaborate in activities that generally support Cornell Cooperative Extension and perform other duties as assigned. *Health and Safety – Applied to all duties and functions* * Support the Association to maintain a safe working environment. * Be familiar with and strive to follow applicable federal, state, and local regulations, Association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement, and standards. * Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified. *EEO/EPO and Policy – Applied to all duties and functions* * Appreciate and embrace diversity in all interactions with clientele, staff, volunteers, and the public. * Assist the Cornell Cooperative Extension system in reaching out to diverse audiences. * Aware of, and adheres to, established Cornell Cooperative Extension Association of Sample County policies, procedures, and Cornell Cooperative Extension Skills for Success. * Contribute to the organization's overall success by performing all assigned duties professionally, promptly, and accurately. *Equal Opportunity Employment* _Cornell Cooperative Extension is an employer and educator recognized for valuing AA/EEO, Protected Veterans, and Individuals with Disabilities.
