JOB SUMMARY:
This role is based in the Materials Engineering and Testing department located in the Polaris Product Development Center, Wyoming, Mn. This department is a Central Operations Team and services the materials testing, validation and analysis needs of all Polaris product powersports platforms including but not limited to off-road vehicles, boats, snowmobiles, motorcycles, and military.
The department uses a wide range of testing equipment and conducts tests on a broad range of materials. This role is responsible for sample preparation, completion of laboratory materials testing and validation, writing reports, results analysis as well as some maintenance of equipment. This is a hands-on position based in the laboratory where the successful applicant will be required to prioritize tasks and complete testing in an efficient and organized manner. Flexibility and the ability to multitask is key as this position will simultaneously work on environmental and chemical testing, metallurgical sample prep, hardness testing and failure analysis.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Metallurgical sample preparation and evaluation
  • Mechanical testing – tensile, fatigue, and test development
  • Failure analysis and fractography
  • Optical microscopy and digital imaging
  • Scanning electron microscopy investigation
  • X-ray and CT analysis
  • Conducting accelerated environmental tests
  • Coating performance and validation testing
  • Responsible for operating, maintaining, and calibrating test equipment
  • Writing concise accurate reports outlining data-based conclusions
  • Maintain test schedule for multiple test resources and report out to project leads
  • Implement lean practices to optimize through-put in the lab
  • Maintaining and operating an organized materials lab
  • Establish and write lab procedures associated with testing in order to ensure repeatability
  • Other duties as assigned
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & EDUCATION:
  • Minimum 2- or 4-year Technical Degree with 1 year laboratory experience, or 5+ years of laboratory experience in lieu of formal education
  • Experience in tensile testing, test development, and servo hydraulic test system
  • Experience using a scanning electron microscope and/or X-ray equipment
  • Experience in metallurgical sample preparation, use of microscopes, and hardness testing equipment
  • Experience with failure analysis and fractography of metal and/or plastic samples
  • Experience with use and proper handling of various chemicals and associated safety procedures Knowledge of manufacturing processes (casting, forging, welding) is beneficial
  • Non-destructive testing (ultrasonic/eddy current) is a plus
  • Strong aptitude and interest in learning new skills to support responsibilities of a growing role
  • Applicants shall have strong computer skills and experience with Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, and Excel
  • Independence and self-motivation is essential for success at this position

  • Critical thinking and a problem-solving mindset
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Majority of time is spent in a materials lab environment or at a computer, prolonged sitting and/or standing may be necessary to compete tasks.
