The Core Technologies group of John Crane in Morton Grove IL is currently seeking a skilled Materials Engineer specializing in Ceramics to join their Research and Development team. This position will support efforts to develop novel ceramic materials through advanced ceramic processing routes. We are looking for a self-starter with good organizational and time management skills and demonstrated ability to produce high-quality innovative technical content. The candidate is expected to have a sound working experience in ceramic processing, characterization techniques, evaluation of mechanical, thermal and tribological properties and failure analysis.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Plan and conduct research activities that support the design and development of new ceramic seal components as well as modify existing products to meet customer’s specifications.
  • Manage projects to ensure on-time delivery of high-quality results appropriate to the project goals. Document accomplishments in clear and coherent technical reports and presentations.
  • Conduct mechanical testing (density, hardness, fracture toughness, flexural strength, etc.), sample preparation (cutting, grinding, polishing, etching, etc.), microscopic analysis (SEM/EDS, Optical), and tribological testing (wear and coefficient of friction, using Pin/Disc-on-Disc) at John Crane’s technology labs.
  • Liaison with external research institutions and accredited materials testing centers to support materials development and testing efforts.
  • Create 3D models and 2D drawings for prototype parts and mold components.
  • Support ceramic processing activities as and when required.
  • Identify, evaluate and coordinate with raw materials and equipment suppliers and support procurement activities.
  • Review literature and R&D activity in other areas to bring new ideas and evaluate the applicability of those new ideas within John Crane to develop new technology.
  • Learn and operate analytical instrumentation, as needed.
  • Ensure proper operating procedures are followed, adhering to all safety policies and procedures and quality regulations and standards.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as requested to achieve business objectives.

The Individual

  • MS in Ceramic engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent engineering discipline from an accredited institution.
  • 5+ years of experience in research and development of new materials.
  • Experience in ceramic materials and their Composition-Process-Microstructure-Property relationship is essential.
  • Sound knowledge in materials characterization techniques (physical, mechanical and thermal), microscopy (optical, SEM and EDS), material testing and failure analyses are required. Experience in tribology testing (coefficient of friction, wear, etc.) is a plus.
  • A functional technical knowledge of Finite Element Analysis (FEA), and expertise in drafting software (such as Solid Edge) are required.
  • Experience in design and thermal simulation of graphite molds, is highly desirable.
  • Ability to learn and master new processing and characterization techniques.
  • Must be self-motivated, with good interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and demonstrated success working in a team environment.
