Maverick Landing Community Services Job at City of Boston
Overview:
MLCS has built robust programming that has enriched the lives of East Boston residents for over a decade. We will directly engage at least 30 youth as community builders, instantly serving their neighborhood by working 10-20 hours per week on one of our three tracks: Community Support, Makerspace Mentorship, and Production & Marketing. Since the onset of the pandemic, MLCS has been shifting gears, adapting to community needs, uplifting and supporting families, and promoting better overall health equity in our community. We made a big impact in the areas of food insecurity, housing & eviction defense, and youth workforce programming. We also participated in a 10-month long strategic planning session that outlined the best strategies and tactics for moving forward as an organization. Post pandemic, we’ve been planning the re-launching of our kids (ages 7-12) makerspace. We plan on having partner volunteers running programming on individual days during the week, as well as Leaders to support with our academic support hour, prior to program start time. A weekly Kickback outreach series provides youth opportunities to build community, identify issues in their community, and work with tools in our makerspace to support their advocacy. For example, youth have made stencils to support affordable housing advocacy work with City Life Vida Urbana (CLVU). Youth also support social community building with activities such as paint nights, movie nights, paid production, teaching the use of laser cutting to others, and supporting community dinners. Responsible working practices and time management are integrated into every aspect and provide individuals with basic fundamental skills and training necessary for future problem-solving and unique career opportunities.
