Responsibilities/Job Description:

Medical Assistant Apprentices perform limited Medical Assistant duties (within limits of current training) while taking coursework and studying toward certification as Medical Assistant at Rasmussen University. Their work is guided and supervised by the Service Line Primary Care Manager at the M Health Fairview Clinic Tamarack in Woodbury, MN


Upon completion of the Apprenticeship, the team member will be able to facilitate many aspects of the patient visit experience including, room set up, point of care tests, vital signs, specimen collection, blood draws, administration of medications and immunizations. And, environment aspects such as room cleaning, sterile processing, quality controls, fire, and other safety precautions.


The Apprentice may assist clinic Physicians and Advanced Practice Professionals as trained and directed and may perform administrative duties including patient check in and out, scheduling referrals and follow-ups, obtaining signatures, and directing phone calls.


Candidates must be available to start school the week of July 3, 2023.


Apprenticeship Details:

The program is one year long. Apprentices are required to work a .6 FTE (48 hours per two-week pay period) at the clinic and be accepted into the Medical Assisting program at Rasmussen University (the Eagan Campus) after receiving a job offer. Apprentices must maintain full time enrollment and passing grades and must intend to continue employment at Fairview Health Services. Starting wage is $20.00 an hour and as apprentices progress in their program they will receive quarterly increases ending in $21.00 an hour wage in the fourth quarter.


Apprentices are responsible for their tuition bills and for pursing the benefits associated with the program that are crafted to help offset the cost including:

  • Sponsorship funds - Apprentices are eligible for $4,500 in funds to assist with offsetting education expenses. A Workforce Development point of contact will work directly with the Apprentice to get a copy of their tuition statement and cover up to $4,500 of the statement. The payment is sent directly to Rasmussen. If the statement is less than $4,500, the remainder can be accessed for the following quarter and so on.
  • Tuition reimbursement/direct pay – Apprentices are eligible for up to $5,250 per year with a one-year work commitment.
  • Discount - Rasmussen offers a 20 percent discount on tuition as a M Health Fairview employee.

Apprentices are registered with the Dept. of Labor and sign an agreement that outlines the hours you will spend in on the job training and classroom instruction.

Qualifications:

Education

Minimum: High School diploma or equivalent.

Interest in becoming a Medical Assistant and working in the healthcare field with a team-based approach.

Upon job offer must be eligible for admission/enrollment in the Medical Assistant program at Rasmussen University; the partner education institution selected by Fairview as described above. Proof of enrollment may be requested.

Must be able to attend college and work in our Apprentice position, both equaling full time hours.


Must obtain Basic Life Support certification from American Heart Association or Red Cross prior to externship (toward the end of the program).


Related Experience

Minimum: Basic business office skills, clinical skills, and computer skills.

Preferred: Knowledge of medical terminology, prior healthcare experience.
