  • GENERAL SUMMARY
      Works under the supervision of the Core Lab Managers. The Medical Technologist's primary job function is to perform and assess laboratory/or tests and procedures. Performs quality control, routine maintenance and other duties as assigned.
  • QUALIFICATIONS

    • Education:

      • High School Diploma or successful completion of an equivalent High School Exam Required
      • Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Technology required

    • Licensure:

      • MT or MLS licensure by ASCP or AMT required

    • Experience:

      • Experience preferred

    • Interpersonal Skills:

      • Excellent interpersonal skills in dealing with patients and patient's family, physicians/providers and other members of the hospital staff.
      • Effectively supports the mission and demonstrates the values of SOMC by honoring the dignity and worth of each person. Shows concern and respect for others by dealing with customers and co-workers in a compassionate, sensitive, and responsive manner.

    • Essential Technical/Motor Skills:

      • Ability to use hands for repetition and fine manipulation when operating instruments and performing venipunctures.

    • Essential Physical Requirements:

      • Must stand and/or walk 75% of work hours per day while processing specimens, performing tests and specimen collection. Sits 25% of work hours performing tests and/or completing documentation.

    • Essential Mental Requirements:

      • Ability to follow established procedures. Ability to pay close attention to detail when collecting and performing testing. Requires the ability to adjust to fluctuating workload and meet established deadlines.

    • Essential Sensory Requirements:

      • Requires good vision and color discrimination to perform testing. Requires the ability to communicate clearly and effectively when responding to routine inquiries and reporting results.

    • Exposure to Hazards:

      • Exposure to bio-hazardous materials. Needles and infectious diseases in clinical laboratory and patient care environments. Chemical exposure in laboratory testing areas. Frequently exposed to noise.

  • JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES AND PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS
      The following is a summary of the major job duties of this job. Other duties may be performed, both major and minor, which are not mentioned below. Specific activities may change from time to time.
      • Performs routine and complex analytical testing on blood and other biological specimens using automated and non-automated instrumentation as per established procedures. Assess and correlates test results before reporting.
      • Performs and documents quality control and quality assurance data. Documents all quality control failures and Corrective actions taken. Reports documentation to supervisor for review. Participates in proficiency survey testing program.
      • Performs calibrations as assigned. All documentation reported to section manager for review.
      • Performs and records routine daily maintenance, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting and resolves minor problems. Notifies section manager of all problems and action taken.
      • Keeps work area clean and orderly. Follows all safety policies and procedures. Prepares and labels reagents, controls and stock solutions. Helps maintain supply inventory.
      • Performs phlebotomy and EKGs as assigned. Prepares specimens for distribution to work areas. Processes microbiology specimens as required. Prepares specimens for transport to reference laboratories.
      • Performs clerical and computer tasks and procedures as required.
      • Participates in orientation and training of new employees and students.
      • Participates in competency assessment of new and current employees as required.
      • Participates in the updating of procedure manuals.
      • Performs other duties as assigned.
