The Department of Meetings & Expositions (DMES) is the Society's primary resource in the delivery of scientific conferences and meetings that advance the practice of chemistry and related sciences. Position Summary:

DMES-sponsored and co-sponsored events afford chemists of varying stages of proficiency to grow their passion for chemistry, advance their career, and expand their professional network. Our meetings are opportunities for ACS members and non-members to connect and share ideas with thousands of chemical professionals from around the world. The Meeting Planner Assistant will support the DMES team in the completion of activities for upcoming national, regional, and specialty meetings that will contribute to their success. Focus will be on meeting logistics, data management, exposition services, and development of promotional and resource content for staff and meeting attendees. Assignments will require working as a team member as well as completing individual tasks. A successful intern will have strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills, with an appreciation for deadlines, flexibility, and collaboration.


Primary Responsibilities:

The intern will assist DMES staff to ensure that department achieves its objectives efficiently and seamlessly. The Meeting Planner Assistant will provide support as assigned, as well as assist on tasks as needed across the DMES scope of work.


Potential assignments will fall under multiple categories, including:

  • Utilization of Technical Platforms: room assignments and F&B details
  • Promotional/Resource Content: C&EN Articles, Staff Handbook, Property Resource Book, and Resume Books
  • Meeting Logistics: organization of poster sessions, review of BEOs

Education Requirements:

The ideal candidate will be a rising college junior, senior, majoring in Hospitality Management, Marketing, Communications or Public Relations.


Required Qualifications:

DMES is a fast-paced, high-volume department, particularly during the summer months leading up to the Fall national meeting. Completion of assignments in a timely and efficient manner shape team success. An effective Meeting Planner Assistant must have a consistent level of commitment for completing all work, from the mundane to the challenging.


Preferred qualifications include:

  • Working knowledge of meeting planning
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Equal success working individually or as part of a team
  • Attention to detail and deadlines
  • Proficiency in Adobe Acrobat and MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Aptitude to grasp new technical programs effectively in real time
  • At ease collaborating with individuals of varied professions and levels of responsibility
  • This position will be primarily based in the Washington D.C. (or applicable) office. ACS employees work a hybrid work schedule, consisting of working onsite, three days per week. ACS employees are in the office on Tuesday and Wednesday with the third in-office day scheduled in consultation with the manager. Schedule flexibility may be required for this role to support in-office activities. While always welcome to work in the office, employees may work the other two days of the week from a location of their choice.
