Job Title: Mental Skills Coach

Department: Player Development

Reports to: Senior Director, Baseball Development

Status: Exempt


Primary Objective
: Responsible for coordination, support and assistance to coaches and players in developing their philosophies, awareness, vision, and processes for success of the individuals, and the organization.

Essential Functions:

  • Prepare and execute group presentations for mini camps, Spring Training and affiliates
  • Create a system and a set of routines that will condition the coaches and athletes to develop an attitude and a focus that will give them the best opportunity to perform at their potential
  • Conduct one-on-one meetings and conversations with players
  • Manage and maintain the Mariners Peak Performance portal, including finding relevant content, creating webpages and sending out weekly emails
  • Support coaching staff with relevant mental skills information while always being available as a resource
  • Pursue continued education and research in the sport psychology industry to stay up to date on optimal and ethical practices
  • Will perform other duties as assigned


Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in a Psychology or related field
  • Master’s degree in Psychology, Sports Psychology or related field preferred
  • Minimum two (2) years’ relevant work experience required
  • Basic Spanish speaking proficiency


Competencies, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA’s):

  • Shall demonstrate the ability to be innovative and proactive in promoting new ideas and concepts
  • Implement the Focus Points book and develop an expert level knowledge of the Peak Performance manual.
  • Possess a working knowledge of the Mariners performance metrics.
  • Maintain an expert knowledge of relevant technologies and Mariners portals
  • Shares and expresses thoughts in a clear and effective manner through verbal and written communication skills. Exhibits effective listening skills and builds positive relationships with all team members, vendors, and guests. Is diplomatic, tactful and professional in all forms of communication.
  • Understands and supports the team and is quick to volunteer to assist others. Others view most interactions as being positive with a willingness to achieve common goals. Effective in working with others to cooperatively solve problems. Workplace behavior is consistently respectful of others.
  • Takes personal responsibility for getting things done in a way that positively and professionally represents the organization
  • Demonstrates through their actions and interactions with others a commitment to Mariner Purpose, Mission and Values
  • Competent in required job skills and knowledge. Completes work assignments thoroughly and completely in an accurate, and prompt way. Identifies and corrects errors. Is careful, alert, and accurate, paying attention to details of the job.


Physical Activities and Working Conditions:

  • Travel to affiliates throughout the organization may be required
  • Attend and assist with pre and/or postseason camps as assigned by the Director of Player Development as needed
