The Meter Technician/Specialist installs, maintains, and services water meters, fire hydrant meters, boxes, and meter interface units. Connect, reconnect, and disconnect service at the meter. Disconnect delinquent accounts, locking and assisting in pulling meters when necessary. Perform meter test on 5/8” and 1” meters for accuracy. Ensure water meters and related equipment are functional, properly installed, maintained, tested, repaired, and replaced as necessary. Identify and report suspected theft of service to supervisor.
The selected candidate will be hired as a Meter Technician, Meter Specialist II or Meter Specialist III depending on their qualifications.
Duties
- Connects and disconnects water service, utilizing a handheld computer to obtain current readings. Disconnects delinquent accounts for non-payment. Performs rechecks and installs locks on meters when water is illegally turned back on. Pull meters when necessary. Installs new meter if the meter was pulled and provides billing personnel with new meter information. Reconnects service after outstanding balance is paid. Alerts supervisor of any suspected theft of service.
- Utilizes handheld computer to obtain readings for billing system. Verifies low and high readings for accuracy.
- Assists in solving meter problems detected by drive-by unit. Change meters, registers, meter interface devices, cutoffs, meter boxes and lids when necessary. Assist in repairs of large meter unitized measuring elements to maintain reading accuracy. Utilizes handheld computer to determine meter interface device is functioning properly. Performs meter test to determine if meters are registering accurately. Perform service line repairs. Install and relocate fire hydrant meters. Prepare pulled warranty items for shipment. Report damaged City property to supervisor.
- Responsible for maintaining City property in their possession: truck, tools, hand held computer, and phone. Utilizes defensive driving training. Keeps supervisors aware of equipment and vehicle malfunctions. Keeps vehicle clean inside and out.
- Performs all other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
METER TECHNICIAN (Starting Salary: $15.15-$18.18/hr DOQ)
REQUIRED:
- High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).
- Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
- Six months general work experience
- Must obtain a Class D Water Operator License from TCEQ within two years of hire date.
PREFERRED:
- Six months experience in meter maintenance and water system operations
METER SPECIALIST II (Starting Salary: $16.79-$20.99 DOQ)
REQUIRED:
- High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).
- Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
- Class D Water Distribution License from TCEQ.
- Four years general work experience.
- Two years experience in meter maintenance and water systems operations.
PREFERRED:
- Experience with Automatic Reading Systems and/or Handheld Computers.
METER SPECIALIST III (Starting Salary: $19.02-$23.78 DOQ)
REQUIRED:
- High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).
- Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
- Class C Water Distribution Operator License from TCEQ.
- Six years general work experience.
- Four years’ experience in meter maintenance and water system operations
PREFERRED:
- Prior supervisory experience.
- One-year experience with Automatic Reading Systems and/or Hand Held Computers

Knowledge of general high school math. Computer knowledge necessary to operate hand held computer. Skilled with tools necessary to replace and/or repair meters. Computer literate. Ability to read and write legibly and operate hand held computer. Ability to read meters and obtain correct reading. Ability to get along appropriately with co-workers and the public. Ability to lift heavy objects, to stoop and to bend.
Attendance is an essential function of this position. The City reserves the right to require an employee in this position to work overtime. This position provides services or performs duties for the benefit of the general public during emergency situations. These may include services or duties different from those performed in the usual course and scope of your job. In the event of an evacuation, the incumbent in this position may be required to remain to perform needed services.
