Summary

This is a 2nd shift position. Hours: Monday-Friday, 1:00pm-9:00pm ET.

The Microbiological Technician will play an integral part in ensuring we continue to provide a quality product to our consumers. You will support the Microbiologist in performing all duties related to the microbiological program including but not limited to processing samples utilizing membrane filtration, identifying microbial isolates via PCR, conducting biochemical and other tests on culture plates to aid in identification, and yeast propagation. You will also be responsible for keeping the micro lab clean and organized, lab materials sterilized for aseptic sampling, and ensuring we always have an ample supply of various culture media and other consumables.

Responsibilities

  • Routinely collects aseptic samples from throughout the brewery, including but not limited to brewhouse, FV’s, yeast, BT’s, various water sources, and filler inlets.
  • Conducts standardized microbiological testing in all aspects of the fermentation process from wort to packaged beer utilizing membrane filtration.
  • Perform microscopic inspection and identification of yeasts, bacterium, molds, and fungi utilizing gram staining, catalase, and oxidase tests.
  • Assist Microbiologist with reading, analyzing, and interpreting culture plates.
  • Performs polymerase chain reactions (PCR).
  • Prepare various types of culture media pertinent to beer spoiler detection such as LMDA, MRS, WLN, LCSM, and Lysine.
  • Ensure all propagated and harvested yeast are a pure culture by utilizing plating techniques such as pour or spread plates.
  • Perform ATP & micro swabbing as needed on food contact surfaces.
  • Assist the Microbiologist with the onsite yeast program which includes maintaining multiple yeast cultures from slants, propagating yeast when deemed necessary from a single colony, and eventually stepping up to several liters of slurry for use on a production scale.
  • Regularly sterilize glassware, membrane filtration cups, media, zwickels, manway gaskets, jetter nozzle, and miscellaneous other parts in autoclave.
  • Ensure equipment is properly maintained by running control samples, performing preventative maintenance tasks, troubleshooting, and communicating with equipment manufacturers.
  • Maintain a professional, clean, and organized lab by utilizing 5S methodology.
  • Cross train on other analytical methods in the lab to perform tasks as needed.
  • Always maintain a safety-first mindset whether you are working in the laboratory or out in the brewery production areas.

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology, Biology, Molecular Biology, Food Science or related field.
  • Experience: At least 2 years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of experience and education. Brewery or food manufacturing experience is a plus. You must have experience with Good Laboratory Practices.
  • Computer Skills: Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: cGMP, HACCP, SQF, or brewing certificate is a plus.
  • Language Skills: Must be able to effectively communicate in English, both verbally and written.
