Job Description
To promote a team approach in the provision of specific medication administration to stable residents, under the supervision and direction of the Licensed Nursing staff at MVNH. Job Responsibilities

MNA"s may only administer medications to stable residents via the following routes: Oral (includes po, buccal, sublingual, oral inhalation of metered inhalers, nebulizers, sprays onto mucus membranes of mouth & throat); Nasal; Topical; Ophthalmic; Auricular; Vaginal; & Rectal.
MNA"s may only administer the above noted medications to residents who are "stable" after assessment by the Licensed Nurse. Note: The Charge Nurse and/or Supervisor assume the responsibility for the assessment of all residents prior to delegation of the medication administration to the MNA. The Charge Nurse/Supervisor may rescind the delegation of any resident for medication administration by the MNA, should that resident become unstable. The MNA must immediately advise the Licensed Nurse of any resident who may appear unstable. An unstable resident is one who actively displays signs and symptoms, actions or reactions, or disease processes causing visible deterioration in the condition of the resident, as confirmed through the Licensed Nurse assessment. Unstable status may be noted when the resident presents with acute and unresolved pain, respiratory distress, imminent death, delirium, hemorrhage/shock, recurrent seizures, or dramatic alteration of the resident"s normal vital signs.
The MNA may administer PRN medications via the above noted routes, when directed to do so by the Licensed Nurse who will advise the specific drug, dosage, route, and frequency to be administered by the MNA.
The MNA may "screen" residents for pain using the facility protocols of utilization of the numerical 0-10 index, the Wong Baker faces, or the Modified Abbey Scale. (The NH Nurse Practice Act specifies, however, that only the Licensed Nurse will complete resident assessments.)
MNA"s may count controlled substances with other Licensed Nurses.
MNA"s may administer controlled substances, via the previously defined routes.
MNA"s must adhere to Standard Precautions, including application of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), handwashing, and wearing of gloves as appropriate.
MNA"s must keep informed of, and adhere to, all MVNH policies and procedures.
MNA"s must serve as positive role models for the peers, through demonstration of professional actions and attitude, display of respect to all, promotion of resident optimal independence and activity levels, and through maintenance of privacy and confidentiality of all private healthcare information obtained at MVNH.
MNA"s must communicate effectively with members of the nursing staff through participation in the intershift report (15 minutes before the start of the shift), relayed observations of medication administration and effectiveness, and conveyance of all pertinent information obtained by the MNA.
MNA"s maintain medication cart cleanliness, replenishes supplies, and informs the Charge Nurse of supply and equipment needs.
MNA"s must attend meetings as scheduled by the Supervisor, Director of Nursing, or Administrator.
MNA"s must attend educational programming relative to the MNA status, as well as acquire the mandatory 12 contact hours of education each year.
MNA"s work under their own license as LNA"s and MNA certification.
MNA"s must maintain the flexibility to work as LNA"s or MNA"s as required to meet the needs of the residents within the facility.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Requirements -

Must possess a valid NH LNA license.
Must have worked as an LNA 40 hours per week for the previous 2 years, or part time over the past 5 years with an equivalent of 4,160 hours of LNA work.
Must have successfully completed a NH BON approved MNA course.
Must possess a valid NH MNA certificate.

~ Ability to sit, stand, bend at the waist, and spend considerable time moving
~ Possess manual dexterity to provide necessary care
