MTS (Metro Transfer Station) Driver Job at Metro Waste Authority
PURPOSE OF POSITION
The Metro Transfer Station Driver is responsible for safely transporting various materials, including but not limited to, solid waste, leachate, and recyclables, from various transfer stations to, or from, Metro Park East landfill.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The following duties are normal for this position. Duties and responsibilities are listed to reflect a sense of key priority. They are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Operates tractor-trailer truck to haul garbage and yard waste from transfer station to landfill; follows established procedures in loading, securing, and unloading materials.
- Performs pre- and post-trip inspections of tractor, trailer, and tarping systems to assure everything is in proper working order.
- Completes daily operation reports including documentation of equipment maintenance needs.
- Assists in the repair and maintenance of tractor-trailers, and related mechanical equipment.
- Understands and complies with all IDOT and MWA regulations and policies governing the transport and delivery of solid waste materials.
- Maintains buildings, grounds, and premises of the physical facility to ensure the workplace is tidy, clean, and safe.
- Cleans up debris and litter by means of physical labor, including but not limited to the tunnel, scales, tipping area, and yard.
- Participates in safety and related training programs that are made available.
- Provides courteous external and internal customer service according to MWA Customer Service standards. Understands and properly manages interactions with the public while driving to include public perception of MWA driver’s professionalism, litter control and overall image.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
- Graduation from high school or GED equivalency.
- Prior job-related experience offering comparable services is desirable.
- A valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL A) with job related (Tanker, Air brake and Hazmat) endorsements as required by Iowa Department of Transportation.
- A drug test and pre-employment physical and is subject to random alcohol and drug testing. Must maintain insurability standards.

COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS
- Knowledge of applicable traffic laws and defensive driving techniques in the operation of heavy trucks and trailers, as well as front-end loader operations.
- The capacity to apply common sense understanding of controlling procedures and policies to carry out defined and prescribed transportation services.
- Dealing with standardized situations with occasional or limited variables.
- Capacity to start, stop, control, and adjust the actions of machines to achieve desired results.
- Motor coordination, finger and manual dexterity; eye, hand, and foot coordination, depth perception, and clarity of vision 20’ or more.
- The ability to keep mentally alert and maintain concentration in heavy traffic, inclement weather, and related external forces.
LANGUAGE ABILITY AND INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATIONS
- The capacity to speak and hear normal conversation.
- Understanding and adhering to controlling rules, procedures, policies, contracts, and related materials that impact program requirements and goals.
- Regular interaction with co-workers and the public; expected to demonstrate proper demeanor, behavior, and rapport with the employees and the public.
- The ability to speak and understand English.
ENVIRONMENTAL ADAPTABILITY
- Knowledge of commercial driving regulations and demonstrated skill in maneuvering vehicles in difficult situations such as narrow passageways and ice covered and slick road surfaces.
- Regular exposure to undesirable elements such as wind, rain, snow, high or low temperatures, as well as extremely hazardous road conditions which could lead to significant consequences.
