The Quantum Illumination Radar Project (QIRP) supports the Navy/DoD efforts on developing quantum capabilities. NIWC is involved in the development of microwave instrumentation and data acquisition strategies for the experimentation of superconducting parametric driven resonators to entangle microwave photons. In addition, this project also utilizes conventional microwave engineering approaches.
Starting salary is $26.42 per hour. This position will be working 20 hours per week.
The student, under the guidance of the supervisor, will be required to assist with cryogenic wiring, write software for data acquisition of electronic equipment, document experimental procedures, and other experimental set-ups pertaining to acquisition of the physical properties of devices and compounds. The supervisor will evaluate the outcome of the tasks as work progresses and will make a determination regarding performance.
Assist senior physicists on the design of quantum experiments at low temperature physics, and in any of the areas below of the performer’s expertise:
CRYOGENICS
- Design of cryogenic probes for parametric amplifiers to operate in a dilution refrigerator
- Plan and execute tests at very low temperatures (15 milli-kelvin)
- Electrical interfaces and instrumentation for low temperature experiments
- Some classwork or practical experience pertaining to quantum information
QUANTUM NETWORKING
- Work on network theory
- Laboratory work on microwave hardware
QUANTUM APPLICATIONS
- Quantum coherence
- Quantum Signal to Noise ratios in different scenarios
Graduate Student 2: Can be a PhD candidate or in a Master's degree program and able to perform at a high level. Must be able to accomplish a minimum of 90% of the task without supervision.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Area of Study: Physics, Electrical Engineering, or Math
- Course Work: Basic physics coursework including quantum mechanics and/or quantum science
- Basic understanding of Electrical Engineering, Math, and Calculus
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Previous experience working with MatLab and LabView is desired.
- Experience with instrumentation is a plus.
- Dilution refrigerator experience.
- Quantum information experience.
- Good writing and organizational skills.
- Excellent record keeping methods.
- Familiarity with, and the ability to, write manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals.
