BASIC FUNCTION:
The Nurse Manager is responsible to utilize the nursing process to plan, coordinate, direct resident care, and supervise the nursing staff in care delivery in a 24-hour capacity.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Graduated from an accredited school of nursing, BSN preferred. Current licensure as a registered professional nurse. Two years experience in long-term care/geriatric nursing in an acute care environment, or five years management experience.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The position is located indoors under normal working conditions. Should be able to push/pull 25 lbs.; lift/move 15 lbs. from floor to table; be able to perform moderately difficult manual manipulations such as using a keyboard, writing and filing for extended periods of time; must be able to perform tasks which require hand-eye coordination such as data entry, typing, and using photocopiers. Mobility requirements may include the ability to sit at a computer terminal or work station for a prolonged period of time. Sensory requirements include the ability to articulate and comprehend the spoken English language in addition to being able to read the English language.
FUNCTIONAL PERFORMANCE STANDARDS AND RELATED MEASUREMENT CRITERIA:
A.
Directs nursing care in accordance with philosophy and standards of gerontological care.
1.
Makes daily resident care rounds.
2.
Develops daily nursing assignments to include medications, treatments and resident care assignments, monthly staffing patterns, daily charting and check lists as necessary, and writes end-of-shift daily report.
B.
Prepares a nursing care plan on each resident and reviews it at the weekly multidisciplinary care plan meeting.

Shares responsibility for documentation with unit staff as well as other departments (Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Dietary, and Social Services).
2.
Assesses outcomes and implements appropriate revisions if needed.
C.
Continually monitors and evaluates the quality of care rendered by unit staff personnel.
D.
Keeps Director of Nursing informed of all pertinent matters.
E.
Acts as a resource person for staff.
1.
Orients new personnel to the nursing unit.
2.
Instructs personnel in the administration of proper nursing techniques and procedures according to policy.
3.
Shares knowledge with staff on a continual basis and at each monthly staff meeting.
4.
Supervises and evaluates performance of each staff member.
5.
Supervises and assists in training of nurse aide trainees while they work or train on the nursing unit.
F.
Insures adequate and accurate documentation on all aspects of each resident’s plan of care and progress.

Assigns summaries to appropriate staff members.
2.
Audits for follow-up plan of action if necessary to remedy any existing deficiencies.
3.
Implements nursing assessments of residents for MDS and offers input into resident level of care
G.
Works with other departments to coordinate optimal resident care.
1.
Maintains good working relationship with ancillary departments and communicates on a daily basis, if necessary.
H.
Plans the structure and activities of the unit to facilitate quality resident care in a cost-effective manner.
1.
Utilizes the unit clerk effectively and provides proper education for his/her training as necessary.
2.
Shares expense details and stock reports from various departments with staff on a monthly basis.
I.
Assumes responsibility for personal growth, competence and development.
1.
Demonstrates competence and updated knowledge of area of practice.
2.
Seeks educational and learning experience in areas of identified growth needs and reviews progress during annual evaluation.
3.
Attends all mandatory department and facility inservices.
4.
Serves on committees when requested.
5.
Participates in in-house and outside continuing education programs when offered.
J.
Serves as an administrative role model and active member of management.
1.
Communicates and interprets the objectives and philosophy of the nursing home, both internally and externally, to achieve optimal resident care and community recognition.
2.
Communicates effectively with the Director of Nursing to maintain an effective and efficient nursing department.
3.
Maintains 90% attendance at all meetings required of nursing management personnel.
4.
Formulates written goals and objectives and reviews annually with Director.
K.
Accepts responsibility as delegated.
1.
Demonstrates support of projects of the nursing department, offering input.
L.
Accepts responsibility of employee counseling, discipline, performance appraisal, and recommends employee selection, promotion, transfer, and termination in collaboration with department supervisors and long-term care policies.
1.
On a continuing basis, evaluates the performance of unit employees and provides disciplinary action up to and including discharge as indicated.
2.
Counsels problem employees with adherence to facility protocol and documents accordingly.
3.
Updates position control (regarding staffing) as necessary.
M.
Adheres to hospital/nursing facility policies and procedures related to:
- Mandatory education
- Annual health assessment
1.
Continued education records will be completed and forwarded to Human Resources annually regarding mandatory educational requirements.
2.
Complete annual health assessment form as required, maintains current inoculations.
