This is a Limited Duration Assignment (LDA). Limited Duration Assignments are expected to last up to two (2) years, but may end sooner.
The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) is a program focusing on nutrition education, breastfeeding support, health and diet screening, growth and development monitoring, and health and social services referrals, as well as providing monthly healthy food benefits for pregnant, breastfeeding and postpartum women, infants and children up to five years of age. WIC serves families from many cultures and ethnic traditions, languages, backgrounds and abilities. The WIC Nutrition Assistant completes the WIC certification process which includes enrollment, health screening, growth monitoring, diet screening, nutrition focused counseling, goal setting, food benefit issuance, and follow up planning. In this role, you will facilitate group classes, help connect participants with programs and services in the community, and participate in community outreach activities. All services are provided using participant-centered communication skills in a culturally relevant manner.
As the Bilingual Spanish Nutrition Assistant, your primary responsibilities will include:

WIC Participant Certification: Perform anthropometric measurements (weight and length/height) and hemoglobin, health and diet screening and assessment; assess basic nutrition needs and provide appropriate nutrition focused counseling based on diet, health and lifestyle factors; determine risk factors; assign food benefits; and document all services provided accurately and clearly.

Nutrition Education: Provide appropriate nutrition focused counseling at certifications, individual appointments, classes and events based on Oregon State WIC and USDA guidelines and other approved sources; and facilitate group classes using approved lesson plans.

Community Outreach and Referrals: Refer participants to community programs and services such as health, dental, food assistance, education, home visiting, mental health, early intervention, housing, domestic violence, and/ or parenting skills training or needs.

Breastfeeding Promotion, Education and Support: Promote breastfeeding as the normal way to feed infants; provide counseling at each prenatal WIC visit; teach group prenatal breastfeeding classes; provide basic breastfeeding information and support; issue breast pumps and provide pump education as appropriate.

Minimum Qualifications/Transferable Skills*:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be as noted below. All non-traditional education, training and experience will be evaluated.

Education/Training: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade, AND
-
Experience: One year of experience dealing with the public in a health-related field.

This position requires the ability to speak, write and read fluently in the Spanish and English languages. Language testing is required.

A valid BLS/ CPR card or the ability to obtain certification within 60 days of hire is required.
COVID-19 Vaccination Requirement: To protect the health of the community and employees, Multnomah County requires employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or have an approved medical or religious exception as a qualification of employment.

Previous experience working with WIC eligible families
