Position Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Performs a full range of occupational therapy services in accordance with the scope of clinical privileges granted by the Commanding Officer. Perform a full range of therapy services in support of PH/TBI and related concomitant co Morbidities/disabilities.
  • Evaluates all referred patients to determine current levels of Function-/dysfunction using standardized and clinically accepted measurement and evaluation tools, clinical observations, patient and staff interviews, and review of medical histories.
  • Provides comprehensive rehabilitation objectives/goals to individual patients with deficits in functional performance and occupational roles.
  • Plans and implements complex goal-oriented treatment plans for patients presenting a multiplicity of complex dysfunction. Designs plans to meet patient and clinical objectives in order to maximize restoration of occupational roles/function, such as: selecting activities to increase or improve muscle functional status as well as strength, range of motion, sensation, edema control, and coordination/manual dexterity.
  • Designs and fabricates simple and complex thermoplastic splints, orthotic devices and adaptive equipment to enable patients to complete activities of daily living.
  • Teaches compensatory techniques for accomplishing self-care and work tasks regardless of disabilities (i.e., paralysis, amputations, stiff joint, cognitive or psychosocial dysfunction). Provides patient/family/unit education on treatment procedures, joint protection, energy conservation, and work simplification; selects activities to improve abilities in the area of executive function, auditory and visual attention/processing, decision making and perceptual function.
  • Assures patient treatment is adequately documented in medical records. Participates in various ward meetings, discharge planning, and rounds; validates assessments, communicates finding (orally and in written format) and makes appropriate clinical recommendations.
  • Serves a member of various multi-disciplinary teams, which plan, direct, coordinate and evaluate individual patient treatment plans. Ensures correlation, coordination and communication among staff and health care members involved in promoting successful goal-oriented patient care with recommendation for both short and long-term goal completion before and after patient discharge.
  • Develops, implements and maintains Continued Quality Improvement activities within the area of clinical assignment. Communicates findings to appropriate WRNMMC staff. Initiates and actively participates in clinical research and patient care studies.
  • Maintains proper medical records on all patients treated under this contract in accordance with AR 40- 66. Prepares any additional records or description of care if and when required, on behalf of the MTF (Military Treatment Facility), the Medical Command, the Military Health System, the Department of the Army, Department of the Navy and the Department of Defense.
  • When utilizing support staff, provides a written plan of care to the support staff describing all treatment tasks to the appropriate clinic personnel.
  • Tests and measures the patient's strength, motor development, sensory perception, functional capacity, and/or respiratory and circulatory efficiency. Record findings to develop or revise treatment programs.
  • Plans and prepares written treatment programs based on an evaluation of the patient.
  • Administers manual exercises to improve and maintain function.
  • Instructs, motivates, and assists patients in performing various physical activities, such as non-manual exercises, ambulatory functional activities, and daily-living activities.
  • Administers treatments involving application of physical agents and evaluates effectiveness of treatment at various stages. Adjust treatments to achieve maximum benefits.
  • Plans, conducts, and evaluates occupational therapy treatment/intervention and activities.
  • Makes recommendations concerning standardized treatments/intervention based on medical indications.
  • Completes patient assessments concerning independent living skills, occupational performance, prevocational work adjustment, educational skills, social skills and abilities.
  • Tests neuromuscular, motor, cognitive and psycho-social skills. Interprets results and proposes a treatment/intervention plan, including short and long range goals, indicating frequency and duration of treatment.
  • Provides treatment/intervention according to the prescribed plan, including task- oriented activities, prevocational activities, neuro-motor and sensory-motor activities and patient/family counseling and activities.
  • Participates in the assessment, design and fabrication of adaptive equipment and orthotic devices.
  • Evaluates patient response to treatment/intervention and makes recommendations on changes in treatment as required.
  • Maintains records concerning treatment/intervention provided, including both subjective and objective data.
  • Directs occupational therapy assistants and other professional assistants (such as therapeutic recreation specialists) in carrying out treatment plans.
  • Initiates discharge planning, prepares discharge summary, orders required equipment, and
  • Participates in a multi-disciplinary team to assist in developing intervention strategies to meet the client’s needs.
  • Technically direct and train therapy assistants and aides in the care and treatment of patients and the proper completion of standardized procedures.
  • Develops intervention programs to address clients' needs related to self-care, work and leisure activities.
  • Records treatment, response, and progress in patient's chart and/or automated systems in a timely and consistent manor.
  • Instructs patient and family in treatment procedures to be continued at home. Evaluate devices and recommend modification as required.
  • Coordinates treatment with physician and other staff members to obtain additional patient information, suggest revisions in treatment program, and integrate occupational therapy treatment with other aspects of the patient's health care. Contacts referring physicians regarding patient care concerns, as required.
  • Provides documented treatment and discharge recommendations to members of the staff in routine, emergency, and special cases as needed.
  • Orients, instructs, and directs work activities of assistants, technicians, aides, students, etc.
  • Provides input and attends rehabilitation team meetings, seminars, and quality assurance meetings.
  • Participates in peer review activities.
  • Interprets physician referrals and determines appropriate evaluation procedures. mm. HCW may be required/invited to attend professional conferences to obtain continuing education or provide presentations at local, state, and/or national levels, at the discretion of the Supervisor and/or Department Chief.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Possess Masters or Doctoral degree in Occupational Therapy from an Occupational Therapy program/institution accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE).
  • Certified in occupational therapy through the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT).
  • Possess a minimum of 2 years’ experience in the evaluation and treatment of patients with neurologic and/or brain injury diagnoses (e.g. Cerebrovascular Accident, Traumatic Brain Injury, Brachial Plexus Injury, Muscular Dystrophy, Multiple Sclerosis, etc.).
  • Possess a current license to practice as an anesthesiologist in any state or the District of Columbia at all times. The license must grant the provider the ability to use diagnostic pharmaceutical agents (DPAs) and therapeutic pharmaceutical agents (TPAs).
  • Must be a US Citizen.
