We have a wonderful opportunity for an On-Call Senior Animal Research Technician to join our Research team at Bloodworks Northwest. The position works in an on-call capacity in partnership with the Vivarium Team to assure that all daily operations comply with regulatory and procedural standards, quality control and animal welfare. This position is a subject matter expert (SME) in the Animal Research Technician role.

Principal responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Animal Welfare Regulations & Records Management
Candidate must have a working knowledge of all Federal animal welfare regulations as set forth in “The Guide for the Care and Use of Animals”, the” Veterinary Panel on Euthanasia”, the “Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare” (OLAW), and the “Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee”(IACUC). The qualified applicant will also be vigilant of any animal related activities being performed within the Vivarium, and be able and willing to report concerns to the appropriate chain of command.
Animal Care
Follow animal care Vivarium “Methods” (SOPs) as outlined in the Vivarium Methods Manual:
Provide hands-on support for all Animal Husbandry. This includes keen and knowledgeable observation of the animals and their surroundings, cage changing, and daily room checking for any abnormalities in the environment, and/or the equipment. Must be able to resolve any non-compliances with the SOPs on these items and/or to get help from the appropriate chain of command.
Health checking: The candidate must be able to detect any mouse abnormalities or illnesses as well as flooded cage issues, and be able to identify and apply appropriate treatments for standard, non-emergency abnormalities (such as tooth trimming for malocclusion, high calorie food in the cage for runted weanlings, toenail trimming, antibiotic ointment application or dermatitis medicine, etc. for mild problems), OR, to triage more serious or emergency problems correctly by contacting appropriate personnel for responses that might be required to alleviate the problem.
Vivarium Facilities
Provide hands-on support for all activities related to Vivarium facilities cleaning, equipment monitoring and maintenance, space allocation, physical plant inspections, supply monitoring and stocking. The Candidate must operate and maintain complex and sophisticated equipment and support systems such as an electronically controlled, automatic Reverse Osmosis watering system, mustiple Individually Ventilated Cage (IVC) rack systems, HVAC systems, and environmental support controls such as heat, humidity, air exchanges and lighting. Must have a working knowledge of how to respond to alerts and/or alarms on each of these systems.
Record Keeping
Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) must be followed for completion of Record logs daily in each room, as well as on each piece of equipment.

REQUIREMENTS: EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma. AALAS certification preferred.
Minimum of 6 years of working with mice in a Specific Pathogen Free, Biosafety Level-2 Medical Research Lab setting that is OLAW (Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare) compliant with increasing senior responsibility is required.

SPECIFIC JOB SKILLS:
The position requires expertise in the field of working with extremely valuable genetically engineered, immune-deficient or human cell hybridized (“Humanized”) mice, in a Specific Pathogen Free Medical Research Vivarium that is governed by Regulatory SOPs. The qualified candidate must be able to communicate fluently, as well as to foster good working relationships with Vivarium staff members, scientific staff, engineer/facilities staff, the Attending Veterinarian, all kinds of contractors, and outside lab clients.Basic knowledge MS Office: Word and Outlook required.
Required mental activities involve continuous use of discretion, interpersonal skills, teamwork, problem analysis, customer service, the ability to read, write, speak and comprehend English, and to perform basic Math. Required mental activities used frequently include decision making, creativity, negotiation, independent judgment and/or independent action.
Required physical activities include continuous standing and walking (up to 7 hours daily), reaching, feeling, hearing, handling and repetitive motions of hands/wrists. Required physical activities used frequently include walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing, talking (all used frequently); and sitting and crawling (all used rarely).
The ability to push, pull and average of 200 pounds and lift an average of 40 pounds throughout the day is required, as is the ability to carry an average of 10-25 pounds throughout the day. Occasional heavy lifting required up to 60lbs.

WORKING CONDITIONS
This position is an on-call, 15 hour per week maximum (and only required on intermittent, occasional weeks), non-benefitted, fill-in position (up to 100 hours per year) during emergency Vivarium situations.
Job conditions to be expected include working a schedule that includes weekends and holidays. May include minor travel. Requires the ability to participate in a 24/7 vivarium emergency response team capacity.
Position is required to work with animal allergens, dust particles and/or possible exposure to latex. Proper protective clothing or other protective devices will be provided.
Position is exposed to aerosol danders from animals and may require use of supportive equipment for breathing.
Job will include constant standing, extensive close work, significant lifting and heavy pushing/pulling.
This position requires the administration of controlled substances for animal anesthesia and analgesia.
Incumbents are at risk of injuries, bites or scratches from vivarium animals.
Requires gowning in with a minimum of scrubs, labcoat, booties, gloves, bonnet and face mask.
This work may be emotionally stressful.
This position has direct exposure to blood borne pathogens and requires work with human and animal blood and tissue samples and non-pathogenic viruses (Biosafety Level 2)
Telecommuting is not offered in this role.
