Under guidance of the Shift Manager, this position supervises a group
of Operations Foremen, ensuring subordinates perform their jobs
efficiently, safely and in a timely manner. Communicates vessel
operation sequence and stevedoring requirements to subordinates.
Executes the planned yard sequence and advises planners on information
required.
The Assistant Manager of Terminal Operations is responsible in performing and managing Assistant Operations Manager functions from an off-dock location. You will, perform all terminal support functions assigned to the department, ensuring the service objectives of the Company are achieved.
The role involves business functions traditionally performed at an ocean terminal from and off dock location. The Coordination and communication with terminal staff is crucial and an understand data reporting, data analysis, data reconciliation, and data input supporting terminal operations. Ensure critical business systems - systems are updated and current.
Functions one is expected to perform include but are not limited to the following:
  • Vessel Reporting, documentation, and billing
  • Problem Resolution
  • Customer Coordination
  • Load List / Baplie
  • Express / SPARC’s /N4
  • Labor Dispatching and Payroll reconciliation
  • Vessel Planning and Operations
  • Terminal Operational Support
  • Blue Collar Labor Scheduling
  • PMA automated systems
  • Yard and Rail Planning
  • Vessel Services
  • Customer Service, Coordination, and Communication
  • Assist in on-boarding both customers and business functions
RESPONSIBLITIES:
This is a Management Position; it requires significant commitment, personal responsibility, and accountability.
  • You are responsible and accountable for significant decisions on behalf of the Company. You are expected to represent the Company in the conduct of your job, and ensure the Company’s core values and all safety, legal, and regulatory policies are maintained at all times.
  • This position requires that the employee rotate and is defined as follows: (“rotating functions performed”, “rotating between day and night shifts” and “rotating between weekday and weekend work”).
  • Perform the responsibilities of the Manager, Terminal Operations Support their absence.
  • Complete all work assignments in a productive, efficient, cost effective, and safe manner.
  • Responsible to maintain a safe and clean working environment.
  • Responsible for operating within budgeted guidelines for both the Terminal Support department and the Terminals we support.
  • Responsible for ensuring that all terminal / business systems are accurate, current, and operating correctly.
  • Receive and process daily, all necessary data, verifying all information is correct and that head counts, container counts, and internal / external communication and requests meet customer / stakeholder needs.
  • Minimize the operating cost by eliminating redundancies, refinement of processes, and utilization of resources, controlling and ensuring information integrity, and improving the quality of the of the function results we perform.
  • Supply training and guidelines for supported locations.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
  • A college degree and/or other management experience preferred.
  • Ability to work a combination of shifts and hours including weekends and holidays. (Hours and shifts are not based on a 40-hour work week). Operational requirements are the priority.
  • 1 - 2 years of industry, experience is preferred. Experience with APMT business systems should be highlighted.
  • Strong computer skills are essential in this role: Word, Excel, Power Point, Internet Explorer, Windows environment.
  • The ideal candidate has experience with managing organized labor, vessel planning, yard planning, rail planning, labor dispatching, and general terminal operations.
  • Good communication skills are required, ability to work under pressure and make on the spot decisions are also necessary.
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment such as computer terminal, PC, calculator, copier and fax.
  • Adaptability: Demonstrates flexibility to meet undermined tasks and willingness to assume additional responsibility.
  • Decision-making: Makes appropriate decisions; exhibits sound judgment. Creates contingency plans and alternative solutions to problems.
  • Problem Solving: Identifies and comprehends elements of a problem, evaluates all alternatives, and weighs the solutions. Has the innate curiosity to seek “out of the box” solutions that others can’t, won’t, or don’t.
  • Interpersonal: Ability to develop a rapport internally and externally with Labor Unions, ILWU workforce, customers, industry stakeholders, and terminal management.
