Job Description:

Title: Operations Crew Member

Classification: Part-time, Non-exempt, Less than 30 hours/week; Flexible schedule option between core hours of 7:00a-4:30p Monday-Friday

Location: South Bend, IN / On-site

Reports to: Warehouse Manager

Salary Range: Starting at $11.00 - $14.00/Hour (Depending on experience)

Job Summary:

The Operations Crew Member role is responsible for sorting, rotating, storing, stocking, and distributing food and products in a safe and timely manner. The position uses and maintains warehouse and power equipment, while adhering to all safety practices and procedures. This person is welcoming of community members, assists clients with their shopping experience, and works well with volunteers. The position is also responsible for keeping the FBNI facility, grounds, and equipment clean and in working condition.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist Warehouse Service Coordinator in the selection of USDA orders.
  • Assists with the inventory, distribution, location staging, and proper recordkeeping of fresh, frozen and dry foods received and delivered.
  • Checks received product for discrepancies and reports discrepancies to the Warehouse Manager.
  • Maintain and inspect warehouse and power equipment to ensure proper working condition and report issues to supervisor.
  • Maintain and log updated temperature checks.
  • Maintains the organization and cleanliness of the work area including coolers, freezers, distribution dry storage areas and pantry area, and performs light duty cleaning in other areas as needed.
  • Moves food product and related materials for inspection and/or sorting.
  • Participate in and contribute to accurate inventory and cycle counts.
  • Perform daily inspections for refrigeration sanitation and neatness including cleaning cardboard and plastic shrink wrap, moving pallets and preparing for anticipated next day work.
  • Responsible for the preparing agency shopping orders and orders for next day deliveries by Agency drivers in an accurate and timely manner with attention to food safety.
  • Serve as back-up for Agency Distribution Coordinator and assist agencies with loading product into vehicles.
  • Unload incoming donations and purchased product, and verifies the weight and count of all items, then accurately records donations on receiving reports. Affix pallet tag to received product and move in the proper storage area.
  • Coordinating volunteer projects and overseeing volunteers when assigned to assist with projects from beginning to end.
  • Providing training to volunteers, ensuring safety, efficiency and effective communication at all times.
  • Welcome, collect appropriate data, and distribute food items to participants of the food pantry.
  • Maintain food pantry database to report food pantry numbers properly and timely.
  • Refer guests to other programs when necessary or make aware of needs.
  • Changing all furnace filters monthly.
  • Checking mouse traps on a bi-weekly schedule, logging any findings, replace any glue boards or traps if needed.
  • Clean and sanitize touchable areas such as tables, chairs, cabinet handles, door handles, flusher handle on toilets, light switches, paper towel dispensers, sinks, soap dispensers, stall locks, tables, water coolers, window ledges, etc.
  • Clean and stock necessary supplies in supply designated facility areas.
  • Clean bathrooms, boardrooms, breakrooms, and front office area (dusting, mopping, sweeping, vacuuming, cleaning windows, etc.)
  • Empty and dispose all trash from designated facility areas (warehouse, bathrooms, boardrooms, breakrooms, and front office). Wipe down trash cans as needed.
  • Ensuring proper usage and understanding of all chemicals used to perform job and maintaining the Safety Data Sheet Book.
  • Handling any emergency clean up and upkeep requests.
  • Inspecting all exit lighting monthly; report any findings or change any light bulbs if needed.
  • Inspecting all fire extinguishers monthly; log and report any findings.
  • Maintain and keep clean all basic equipment used to perform duties including vacuums, scrubbers, buckets, etc.
  • Maintain cleaning chart, indicating areas that were cleaned and inspected.
  • Maintaining cobweb control and dusting throughout the building.
  • Maintains a neat and orderly janitorial storage areas (such as outside yard tools, inside staging area of brooms, dry mops, wet floor signs, etc. in all janitors’ closets), and ensures cleaning and maintenance supplies are stocked.
  • Manage routine upkeep of exterior areas including grass cutting, weed control, brush trimming, debris picked up on property, snow shoveling/plowing on sidewalks and entry ways, spreading of salt/sand to prevent ice buildup as needed.
  • Notifying management about unsafe conditions or concerning the need for repairs or maintenance.
  • Performing general cleaning of building flooring/steps by sweeping, mopping, shampooing rugs, floor scrubber and vacuuming.
  • Refill paper towel and toilet paper dispensers, bar towels in the kitchen and soap dispensers.
  • Washing walls and windows.
  • Follow health and safety regulations.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications for Education, Training and Experience:

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. required
  • Valid driver’s license for operating forklift truck required.
  • Two to four years of warehouse related experience preferred.
  • Two to four years of custodial, groundskeeper, or building maintenance related experience preferred.
  • Ability to operate various types of warehouse and power equipment including forklifts, electric and manual pallet jacks, lawnmowers, trimmers, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers, and other landscaping equipment, and the ability to learn other equipment as needed.
  • Become ServSafe certified; commit to adhering to safe food handling and storage guidelines and practices.
  • Knowledge of computer functions, Microsoft Suite and able to accurately enter data.
  • Knowledge of landscaping techniques and processes.
  • Must be able to work in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Must be able to work in hot and cold climates – such as with freezer and refrigeration units.

  • Ability to accurately sort, count, and verify items received.
  • Ability to keep the facility and grounds clean and orderly.
  • Ability to perform basic repairs and operate tools or equipment used in routine building maintenance.
  • Knowledge of safety hazards and proper use of various cleaning and sanitizing solutions.

Working Conditions:

This position requires frequent standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, climbing and crouching. Must regularly lift and/or move up to 20 pounds, frequently lift and/or move 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 50 pounds with assistance or use of equipment. This position works in extreme temperature changes involving freezer and refrigeration units.

Employment requires a negative drug screening and successful background check.
