The Florida Department of Health (DOH) is responsible for the health and safety of all citizens and visitors to the state. As a public health agency, the Florida Department of Health must monitor the health status of Floridians, diagnose, and investigate health problems, and mobilize local communities to address health-related issues. The Florida Department of Health develops policies and plans that support health goals, enforce laws and regulations that protect the health of all residents and visitors, and link people to needed health care services. The Florida Department of Health also provides specialized assistance to pregnant women, infants, and children with special health care needs, regulates health care practitioners, and provides medical disability determinations.


Your Specific Responsibilities:

  • Locating and notifying individuals who has been exposed and/or tested positive for communicable disease such as Tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS and STD in a confidential manner.
  • Providing counseling and education to clients.
  • Referring at risk individuals for testing, clinical evaluation, treatment and other disease preventable services.
  • Interviewing infected and non-infected patients to identify partners and other contacts to stop transmission and prevent adverse health outcomes.
  • Serving clients directly via phone or face-to-face in a clinic, jail, home or other setting such as a homeless shelter.
  • Developing, implementing and evaluating education programs regarding various programs such as TB, HIV/AIDS, Immunizations and Refugee Health.
  • Assisting with marketing and special events.
  • Field work including directly observed therapy of medications, assuring compliance with treatment plans.
  • Assisting with outbreaks of various communicable diseases.
  • Working with healthcare providers in the community to assist refugee patients with scheduling of follow-up appointments for primary care and specialty care providers.
  • Attending various task force and other types of community meetings.
  • Attending health fairs within the community; these activities may occur before, during or after normal working hours and/or on weekends or holidays.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing and through empathic listening and to elicit information as appropriate to the needs of the audience.
  • Ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.
  • Ability to persuade others to change their minds or behavior.
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work activities.
  • Ability to operate commonly used office equipment such as computers, printers, fax machine and paper shredder.
  • Ability to use Microsoft 365 products (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, MS Teams, knowledge of Access database software is a plus).
  • Ability to multi-task and handle face-to-face public interactions.
  • Ability to educate patients.

Qualifications:

Minimum

  • Bachelors’ Degree in health or science, may substitute related experience up to four years.
  • Valid Florida driver’s license or able to get one within 30 days of hire.
  • At least one year of client/patients interviewing experience to obtain relevant information.
  • Reliable transportation (i.e., automobile) and willing to use your own vehicle to perform field activities and transport of patients and/or specimens (blood/urine) when necessary.
  • Willing to draw/handle patients’ urine, blood and/or sputum specimens potentially infected with communicable disease such as Syphilis, Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, TB, Hepatitis C, HIV/AIDS or other emerging diseases.

Preferred

  • At least two years of client/patient customer service experience.
  • Phlebotomy training or certification.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish.
