We currently seek an organizing manager, U.S. and Canada, to join our organizing team. In this role you will manage and grow Mercy For Animals' U.S. and Canadian organizing program so it is well equipped to advance campaigns and projects that further our mission while ensuring that our volunteer base is diverse and empowered. This requires an inclusive approach to building people power through recruitment, training, and management of volunteers; mobilizing volunteers to take action; and building volunteer leadership.

You will* do invaluable work*:

  • Manage the development and implementation of Mercy For Animals' volunteer infrastructure and distributed network
  • Oversee the recruitment, onboarding, training, and retention of a diverse group of volunteers and volunteer leaders
  • Develop engagement strategies that cultivate relationships with volunteers, deepen their involvement, develop their organizing skills, and foster inclusive communities
  • Support regular communication with volunteers and manage affiliated volunteer leaders and teams
  • Oversee strategy for mass communication, including email engagement, targeted ads, and digital content, on behalf of the organizing team
  • Manage systems and platforms used to maintain records and engage volunteers, including CRM programs, email listservs, communication and social platforms (such as Slack and Facebook groups), and contact lists
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to develop and implement strategies to achieve Mercy For Animals' strategic plan goals and engage volunteers in our work
  • Build relationships and collaborate with movement and non-animal-movement allies to initiate and execute projects that further our mission
  • Manage, coach, and develop a team of organizers, including aligning tasks with Mercy For Animals' strategic plan, supervising work flow, helping set and track individual goals, supporting professional development, and developing project-management skills
  • Ensure success of the organizing internship program
  • Stay up to date on organizational and recruiting tools and techniques to keep the program innovative and on the cutting edge
  • Adhere to all organizational policies and procedures
  • Perform any other duties assigned by team leader

Your* qualifications will take our organizing team* to the next level:

  • Minimum three years' experience managing volunteers, programs, and events, either as a team lead or in close partnership with a team lead
  • Minimum two years' experience with community organizing, advocacy organizing, or advocacy (familiarity with digital organizing a plus)
  • Experience with campaigning and campaign design (a plus)
  • Experience in training design and facilitation (a plus)
  • Strategic and analytical thinking skills; strong problem-solving skills; and a deep commitment to feedback, learning, and improvement
  • Exceptional organizational, time-management, and project-management skills; strong attention to detail
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills (public speaking experience a plus)
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with excitement about building relationships
  • Demonstrated capacity to effectively supervise, mentor, and develop junior team members
  • Commitment to continued personal, organizational, and movement-wide growth in diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice principles
  • Comfort with corporate and legislative campaigns, including pressure campaigns focused on issues related to animal welfare, plant-based foods, and related food-system issues
  • Commitment to the mission and values of Mercy For Animals
  • Willingness and ability to travel as needed and work flexible hours, including occasional weekends (estimated travel two to six times per year discussed in the interview process)

About Your Team Leader
Your team leader, Shayna (she/her), is the director of organizing for the U.S. and Canada. She volunteered with Mercy For Animals before coming on full time in 2016. Her early experiences as a volunteer taught her the importance of meeting people where they are and leading with compassion. She believes people are our greatest power and organizing is critical to achieving our mission and vision. Shayna strongly values a growth mindset, open communication, teamwork, and a solutions orientation. Outside Mercy For Animals, she enjoys reading; listening to audiobooks; trying to keep her many plants alive; engaging in anything competitive; and spending time outdoors with her chihuahua, Marchesa.
Compensation and Benefits
Earn an annual salary of $55,000–$62,000 (Mercy For Animals is pleased to announce that effective January 1, 2023, the salary range will increase to $66,000-$74,400), depending on qualifications, and enjoy a commute-free life as a remote team member. In addition to a collaborative and innovative work environment, you will be able to take part in our benefits package, including no- or low-cost health, vision, and dental insurance; generous paid time off and sick leave; and a 401(k) retirement plan, with a dollar-to-dollar employer match of up to 3 percent of your annual salary.
