Job Grade: N/A

The Paint line Supervisor has ultimate responsibility for all aspects of the paint line during the course of their shift, including paint line personnel. Personnel responsibilities include employee safety, training, performance evaluations, hiring, firing, disciplinary actions, recognition, development etc. Paint line production responsibilities include the optimization of the paint line equipment and process to maximize the volume of A-grade produced during the shift while meeting Windsor Surry Company standards, practices and expectations in terms of both quality and productivity. These standards will be achieved through strong leadership, teamwork, effective communication, training and a pro-active approach.
Direct reports and coaching responsibilities
Paint line Operator, Paint line Assistant Operator, Area 2 Attendant, Area 3 Attendant, Grader, Grader/Stackers, Wrappers, Patching Stations.
Primary duties and responsibilities

  • Ensure safe work practices are followed by all crew members during the course of the shift.
  • Ensure good housekeeping practices are followed in and around the paint line area.

) Develop and maintain a skilled and knowledgeable work force through excellent training practices, including (at least) annual performance reviews and frequent communication and re-enforcement. Follow up with employees on training items

after they have fully taken over those responsibilities to make sure the correct methods become habits.

  • Make sure each position on the paint line is staffed with personnel who have been trained for that particular job including safety, product quality expectations, operation of equipment, function of equipment, etc.
  • Make sure production schedule is followed.
  • Manage the paint line and paint line crew to efficiently and consistently achieve the Windsor Surry Company quality standards for primed products.
  • Responsible for the individual board quality and overall unit appearance of finished goods units produced during their shift.
  • Manage the paint line and paint line crew to efficiently and consistently achieve the Windsor Surry Company productivity standards for primed products.
  • Promote a pro-active (preventative) environment when it comes to eliminating downtime and defects.
  • Facilitate open and advance communication for upcoming “events“ such as scheduled changeovers, scheduled maintenance, etc. between crew members, maintenance personnel, and managers in order to minimize downtime.
  • Possess operational knowledge of all aspects of the paint line equipment, paint properties, paint application standards, defect identification and prevention/remediation.

I) Possess complete understanding of all quality control tests and test specifications.

  • Possess complete understanding of all shift reporting requirements including where the data comes from and how to interpret it.
  • Manage your personal development by continual learning with respect to paint line equipment and process knowledge, improving written and verbal communication skills, and more effective training techniques for your direct reports.

  • Provide your crew with the knowledge, tools and other resources required to consistently perform their jobs to the level that is expected of them.

  • All plant safety rules and regulations, and the will to consistently follow these rules.
  • Knowledge of Windsor Surry Company standards and expectations regarding safety, quality, productivity and cost control.
  • Possess a clear and complete understanding of defects, including their causes, as well has how to correct them.

Tasks

How to perform preventative maintenance and simple repairs. Detail oriented practices.
Working knowledge of all components of the paint line including paint properties, vacuum coaters, ovens, conveyors, etc.

Working knowledge of the paint line control system as well as Microsoft Excel and Word.

High School Diploma or G. E. D.

MUST HAVE PRIOR SUPERVISOR EXPERIENCE

Ability to read, write, read a tape measure and micrometer, and do basic math calculations.

Prior to the start of the shift, meet with the Plant Manager to share pertinent information on how the paint line ran during the previous day, upcoming changeovers, maintenance issues, attendance or other known issues or potential issues, etc. to facilitate a smooth shift.

  • Prior to the start of each shift communicate to your crew a safety reminder message along with other pertinent information relating to the upcoming shift including such items as upcoming changeovers, personnel assignments, quality or machine issues, etc.
  • At the beginning of each shift, check with Operator and other personnel to make sure they have the resources (ie. people, tools, equipment, etc.) they need to achieve the goal of producing the maximum volume of A-grade material during the shift.
  • At least once per hour, make “rounds” to communicate with each of your crew members, as well as to make visual checks to verify the product quality and productivity at each stage of the process. “Rounds” should include, but are not limited to the following activities:

--Observe potential safety hazards and/or unsafe actions. Instruct/correct as necessary.

--Product quality out of each coater.

--Product quality out of each oven and at the end of the line.

--Product quality of pieces placed into the finished goods unit and appearance of the units themselves.

--Equipment settings such as line speeds, temperatures, etc.

--Process Variable Checklist. Verify how well the paint film is “hiding” the wood grain and double-check wet mils if you see grain showing through the 3 coats.

--Board spacing along the entire length of the paint line, especially into the coaters and transitions into and out of the ovens.

--Defect counts at each grading station to help prioritize corrections to be made.

--Productivity numbers (ie. piece count per hour, volume, etc.)

--Reasons for downtime to help prioritize corrections/adjustments to be made.

--Communicate with crew member with regards to quality and productivity and what can be done to minimize defects and downtime. Act upon solutions.

--Verify your crew members are doing all aspects of their job to satisfaction including quality functions, housekeeping, clean-up, etc.

--Check the quality of patches and repairs to blemished boards to make sure those boards will achieve A-grade when additional paint is applied.

--Shift reports are clearly and accurately filled out.

--Accuracy of unit tagging.

--Look, listen and smell for anything unusual that may indicate a piece of equipment is in need of attention (hot/squeaky bearing, fan/blower vibration, smoke, burning smell, etc.). Notify maintenance and/or write “Maintenance Request” when appropriate.

  • Promote teamwork and excellent communication within your paint line team, and between your paint line team and support personnel such as maintenance, fork lift drivers, scheduling, etc.
  • As required, train new employees and employees that are new to their job. Audit the work of employees new to their position and provide them with feedback (both positive and negative) so they can continue to learn and improve.
  • When scheduled or unscheduled downtime occurs, make sure the time is not only minimized, but also well utilized in terms of other tasks that need to be completed while the line is down.
  • In conjunction with maintenance and your Operator, lead the effort to determine the root cause of downtime whenever possible.

At least three days per week, audit at least two Finished Goods units pulled from Finished Goods inventory. Submit the completed audit form to the Plant Manager.

  • On at least an annual basis, complete an annual review with each of your team members. Submit the documentation to Personnel.
  • On a weekly basis, review the time sheets for each of your employees, as well as other attendance records.

I) Continually look for opportunities to reduce employee exposure to injuries through

equipment modifications, better ergonomics, etc.

  • Continually look for opportunities where we can improve product quality, machine performance, cost reduction, etc. through changes in procedures, capital expenditure, equipment modifications, etc.
  • On a daily basis, compile all shift reports and verify their accuracy. After review, post reports before leaving for the day.

Working Conditions

  • Walking/Standing full shift on concrete floor or rubber mat. Some climbing of ladders, lifting, pushing, pulling, bending, stooping and twisting.
  • Lift 50 lbs.
