GENERAL REPAIR TECHNICIAN
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS: Under routine supervision, performs experienced service maintenance work in the routine maintenance and repair of building electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting, grounds, and/or mechanical equipment related to the area of assignment. Employees may assist skilled crafts and trades workers. Work differs from that performed by one of the County's skilled crafts and trades workers in that it is not exclusively in one crafts or trades area and it is not at the skilled level.

Maintains the structure and systems in an assigned building by making simple and routine repairs.
Requests replacement parts and supplies as needed for building maintenance. Responds to complaints about the building.
Makes minor general repairs to wood fixtures, frames and furniture. Installs door locks, hinges and other hardware. Performs rough painting; sanding down item and applying primer and finish coats.
Performs minor installation, maintenance and repair of basic electrical components in a building.
Performs routine repairs and maintenance on assigned mechanical and/or electrical equipment, rebuilding and/or replacing parts as needed. Operates tools necessary to perform maintenance and repairs.
Reads and makes minor adjustment to controls on equipment and thermostats.
Maintains the grounds of an assigned area; landscaping, mowing and trimming vegetation. Maintains and repairs sprinkler systems.
Assists crafts and trades workers in the skilled repair and maintenance of electrical, plumbing or mechanical equipment and/or building structures.
Maintains working area and tools. Maintains records of work performed and supplies used.
REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: One (1) year of experience in commercial building maintenance and repair.
Additional qualifying education and/or experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted one for the other on a year for year basis.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Required to possess or obtain, prior to employment, an appropriate valid Florida Driver's license.
Required to drive an automotive vehicle to an assigned work site.
In the event of a hurricane, major storm, natural or man-made disaster that may threaten the area, the employee will be required to perform emergency duties as directed.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: (Note: The knowledge, skills and abilities identified in this class specification represent those needed to perform the duties of this class. Additional knowledge, skills and abilities may be applicable for individual positions.)
Good knowledge of the methods and techniques used in building construction, mechanical repair and/or maintenance.
Good working knowledge of electrical, plumbing and HVAC.
Good knowledge of the use of the tools, equipment and materials of at least one of the crafts and trades.
Some knowledge of the safety practices and procedures related to the area of assignment.
Skill in the use of tools for the repair of buildings and/or mechanical equipment.
Ability to understand oral and written technical instructions.
Ability to work from schematics, drawings or sketches.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Some ability to use programmable electronic control devices such as irrigation timers, thermostats, fire alarms, security/access, electronic security device networking and closed circuit television monitors.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: This is moderate physical work.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work involves exposure to noise, fumes, dust, moving machinery, heat, odors and the outdoors.
