Part-Time Horticulturist

Department: Recreation, Parks, Historic and Cultural Affairs

Pay Range: $17 - $19 / Hourly

Job Status: Part Time, Monday – Friday flexible hours 9am – 5pm
Some weekends and evenings for special events.

JOB SUMMARY

The purpose of this classification is to perform manual work, at a high level of skill, as part of a
team engaged in planning, maintenance, and upkeep of public grounds and Historical Assets.
Work is physical in nature and under the direct supervisor of a Coordinator or Crew Leader.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS 

Supports the maintenance and care of public grounds which include boxwoods, antique

roses, historic daffodil collection, perennial beds, orchard, vegetable and herb gardens,

mature trees and shrub plantings. 

Conducts weekly inspections on all sites for any relevant care issues regarding plant, shrub,

tree, grounds, drainage, and pathway care and maintenance. 

Maintains records of specific data regarding bloom times, problems with disease/insects,

tree and shrub health, solutions to resolve, and other significant observations and

inventories. 

Assists with work quality oversight of contracted landscape services that conduct regular

mowing, blowing, and trimming at all sites. 

Plans and communicates weekly tasks, training, and support of garden volunteer program. 

Participates in weekly meetings with supervisor to discuss future projects, volunteer

progress, planning, and budget. 

Researches historical landscapes and provides planning and development support.

Conducts public outreach such as garden shows and grounds tours as necessary; works with

civic gardens groups and local organizations for volunteer work days and projects. 

Assists Division with special events and programs as necessary. 

Performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:
Two or more years of relatable work experience is required for this position. High School diploma
is preferred with experience and/or education, which provides the necessary knowledge, skills,
and abilities for this job.

Licenses or Certifications: 

Horticulturalist Certification preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

Knowledge of small and large power equipment. 

Ability to learn, comprehend, and apply all city or departmental policies, practices, and
procedures necessary to function effectively in the position. 

Ability to follow safety and handling protocols.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work requires the ability to exert some physical effort, which may involve lifting, carrying,
pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials; must be able to lift more than 45 pounds at a
height of 36 inches. Tasks may require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of
colors, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is regularly performed with exposure to outside environmental and weather conditions.
