GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
Performs operational, laboratory, and maintenance functions in the wastewater treatment plant; performs related duties as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
An employee in this class performs a variety of operational, laboratory, and maintenance duties designed to produce safe treatment of potable water, and disposal of domestic and commercial waste materials. Work is performed on an assigned or rotating shift. Work includes monitoring the plant's operation through observation, mechanical readings and the results of standard chemical and biological tests and to make necessary adjustments in the process as conditions or test results dictate. Other duties include performing standard laboratory duties and tests and assisting with plant and facilities maintenance. Work also includes substantial record keeping of work activities. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Wastewater Treatment Plant OCR and reviewed by observation, conference, and reviewing records for adherence to operations standards, instructions, and safety practices.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Makes regular tours of plant and equipment assisting in plant operations; Monitors gauges, meters, control panels, etc.;

Records readings from meters and instruments;

Checks functioning of equipment;

Regulates and adjusts motors, pumps, blowers, valves and other apparatus to meet changing operating conditions;

Performs various tests and takes samples of influent and effluent;

Operates dewatering press;

Skims grease from settling tanks;

Pumps sludge, drains tanks, cleans clarifiers;

Cleans and services pumps, motors and other equipment;

Makes minor or emergency repairs and performs minor preventive maintenance on plant equipment;

Performs general plant maintenance duties.

JOB RELATED PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS:
This position involves heavy work requiring the employee to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and less force frequently to move objects. Physical activity related to this position may include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Sufficient visual acuity is required to prepare and analyze data and figures; use a computer terminal; visually inspect and assemble small parts involved in the operation of machines and determine if small defects are present and use measuring devices. An employee in this position will be exposed to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions; subject to hazards including work in high places, exposure to working mechanical parts, electrical currents, and exposure to chemicals; and subject to extreme heat and cold, noise and vibrations, and working in narrow or close quarters. The worker may be exposed to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Working knowledge of the operating characteristics and maintenance requirement of wastewater treatment plant; working knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, and permitting requirements; working knowledge of the occupational hazards of the work and of necessary safety precautions; some knowledge of standard laboratory test and procedures used in a wastewater treatment plant; some knowledge of hydraulic, chemical and mechanical principles pertinent to wastewater treatment plant operations; ability to detect flaws in the operation of mechanical equipment and to determine proper remedial measures; ability to conduct routine laboratory test; ability to understand and follow moderately complex oral and written instructions; ability to read meters, charts, and technical manuals and drawings accurately and to maintain records of shift operations; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers and superiors.

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Graduation high school and experience while certified as a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Certification at a minimum of level II by the State of North Carolina for Wastewater Treatment Plant Operators.
