We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit agency that promotes justice by providing free and low-cost legal services to underserved immigrant children, families, and refugees. As an organization that combines expertise developed from the daily practice of immigration law with a deep commitment to advocacy, RAICES is unique among immigration organizations. We provide a holistic approach to immigrants. RAICES not only assists immigrants in navigating through complicated immigration laws, but we also assist immigrants with social needs through case management and providing assistance with housing. RAICES advocates that justice is an inherent human right that should be awarded to everyone regardless of age, religion, country of origin, sexual orientation, or ability to pay for legal counsel.

COVID-19 Response
Protecting the health and safety of employees and clients remains essential. We currently practice social distancing and encourage masks in all public areas. RAICES is using a phased-in approach to return staff to resume in-office operations. This position will require working remotely and in-office at the assigned work location. Applicants must be adaptable and open to working in both environments.

THIS IS A TEMPORARY/CONTRACT POSITION- END DATE OF 03/31/2023

The Dari and Pashto Translator will provide English-Dari and Dari-English as well as English-Pashto and Pashto-English interpretation. The Dari and Pashto Translator will support the delivery of legal services to Afghan clients.

Responsibilities:

• Perform simultaneous and consecutive English-Dari and Dari-English interpretation with translation capability for written summarization as necessary
• Provide up to 8 hours of interpretation per day
• Includes interpretation of conversations and translation of written material
• Reads and rewrites technical documents in specified language, following established rules pertaining to factors such as word meanings, sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, and mechanics
• Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

• High school diploma or GED required
• Experience in conducting interpretations and translations in a business setting Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications:

• Current certification by the American Literary Translators Association (ALTA) or equivalent; a minimum performance level of 12 on the ALTA scoring protocol or equivalent certification is preferred but not required.

Attributes:

• Ability to interpret Dari is required
• Ability to interpret Pashto is required
• Ability to work a schedule of 40 hours per week
• The duration is anticipated to be 3 months for the initial contract with potential for extension
• Must have a deep understanding of appropriate customs
• Must be able to appropriately engage with Afghan evacuees, children, and other vulnerable populations
• Ability to perform simultaneous and consecutive English-Dari and Dari-English interpretation with translation capability for written summarization
