Payroll is a division of the Accounting Services Department. Payroll is responsible for all of the agency’s internal payroll functions including processing timesheets, cutting paychecks, processing benefits payments and calculating and processing Payroll taxes for 300+ staff members on a semi-monthly basis. Under the direction of the Payroll Manager, the Payroll Specialist III is responsible for timely, accurate processing of payroll and benefit transactions.

The Payroll Specialist III participates in the production of semi-monthly payroll, performs the full range of record keeping and payroll processing activities as well filling in as needed in the absence of the Payroll Manager. This position is deadline driven and requires a work schedule to meet these deadlines. In addition, the position shall perform other assigned accounting functions for the Accounting Services Department.

  • Process semi-monthly payroll
  • Calculate and process garnishments
  • Serve as backup for Payroll Manager when needed
  • Reconcile benefit invoices to employee deductions and G/L
  • Provide timely support to staff enquires
  • Maintain accurate and complete filing systems
  • Perform audits of systems to maintain integrity
  • Train new staff in system as part of new hire orientation
  • Calculate and process any needed adjustments, terminations and other changes accurately each pay period
  • Accurately record and document all payroll transactions to ensure complete recordkeeping and audit trail
  • Provide support for all audit needs
  • Assist with quarterly and annual reporting requirements
  • Maintain employee confidence and protect Payroll operations by keeping information confidential
  • Support accounting department and HR as needed
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Actively engage in agency-wide Race and Social Justice Initiative (RSJI), and strive for racially equitable outcomes; take responsibility for creating and maintaining a safe and welcoming community by making room for people of color, trans and gender-non-conforming folks, and other populations who routinely encounter systemic oppressions
  • Attend required safety trainings and meetings; follow all safety and health guidelines, standards, practices, policies, and procedures; and actively participate in the agency’s Emergency Preparedness program and activities

  • Experience in processing payroll, bookkeeping and/or benefit related account reconciliation
  • Strong mathematical competency with the ability to perform reconciliations
  • Intermediate level of computer skills critical including use of database, word processing, spreadsheet software (Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, Word, and Excel).
  • Ability to juggle multiple priorities and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work independently, be proactive, problem solve and take initiative as well as work in and add value to a team environment, pitching in as needed to "get the job done”
