Perinatal Fitness Specialist Job at Eastern Connecticut Health Network
POSITION SUMMARY:
Provides group instruction for pre/postnatal exercise classes, effectively communicates in both group and one-to-one settings, and participates in program development. Reports to Perinatal Education Supervisor.
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:
- Group fitness certification with at least 8 hours of pre/postnatal pregnancy fitness training.
COMPETENCIES:
- Must be able to communicate verbally clearly using the English language.

Job-Specific Competency
- Demonstrates knowledge of good body alignment, proper body mechanics and appropriate exercise techniques for pregnant and postpartum women. Monitors participants during class for proper alignment and technique. Makes recommendations for alternate position/techniques for participants who require modification of certain exercises.
- Demonstrates knowledge of safety concerns applicable to pre- and postnatal women in an exercise environment. Encourages participants to monitor heart rate and to maintain proper fluid intake before, during and after class. Reviews warning signs/contraindications to exercise. Monitors participants for signs of over exertion.
- Prepares discussion topics for classes. Uses current research from independent reading and seminars.
- Explains moves and new routines clearly to allow for smooth movement transitions. Demonstrates motivation, enthusiasm and approachability as evidenced by participants' feedback on class evaluations.
- Allows flexibility within the program to respond to participants' questions and concerns. Answers questions fully and seeks additional information to share with participants if appropriate. Provides time for individualized teaching when necessary.
- Informs participants of their rights and responsibility to make informed choices for themselves and their families related to health care options. Provides information in an unbiased manner and encourages participants to make choices based on their own needs and preferences. Demonstrates acceptance of clients' feelings, rights and choices as evidenced by client feedback.
- Consistently monitors program content. Works closely with other instructors to share ideas and make revisions. Choreographs new routines.
- Utilizes class evaluations to determine accuracy and relevancy of material presented. Reviews and validates participants' evaluation data with Perinatal Education Supervisor and other fitness instructors. Makes suggestions for appropriate changes.
