What do Personal Trainers do?

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Personal Trainer instructs group classes in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that promotes member wellness and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Instructor must role model the YMCA values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility and work daily to develop personal and meaningful relationships with members, volunteers, donors and community.

  • Instructional Expertise: Leads energizing, fun, safe, and educational personal training appointments, as directed by the supervisor, to accomplish the YMCA mission and goals.
  • Instructional Attendance: Instructors are responsible for their regularly scheduled classes, timeliness, and to maintain direct communication with their supervisor.
  • Maintain accurate YFit and Personal Training appointment data, per branch procedure
  • Arrive 5-7 min. before shift start time, allowing the start/end of appointments as scheduled.
  • Follow YFit/PT guidelines by keeping accurate records, scheduling appointments and following-up with participants.
  • Return all equipment used during an appointment to its designated area
  • Immediately report problems, breakdowns in equipment and any unusual situations to the appropriate director
  • Answers questions from members to support them in achieving their goals or directs them to the appropriate staff person. Maintains up-to-date working knowledge of wellness and trends to provide effective information and support to members
  • Builds effective, authentic relationships with members; helps members connect with each other and the YMCA.

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Previous work related experience preferred.
  • Required certifications: CPR/AED, First Aid, national certification (ACE, NETA, AFAA, NASM, ISSA) with a focus on group fitness instruction, Y-USA Foundations of Group Exercise/Strength & Conditioning certification or equivalent higher education diploma
  • Certification in areas of expertise or specialized format
