Outside of these behavioral characteristics, we’re also looking for candidates who are ready to grow and develop and who can envision new ways to improve and enhance services. The Public Works Department delivers a wide range of services to the public as well as other City departments. The Department is responsible for the planning, construction, operation, and maintenance of City-owned infrastructure. The infrastructure includes buildings, streets, parks, landscaping, flood control, beach facilities, and utilities.
The Pest Control Specialist applies chemicals, herbicides, insecticides and various pesticides to trees, shrubs, grass and a variety of plants and soils in and around City properties and facilities. This position differs from Maintenance Service Worker in that Pest Control Specialist performs landscape duties specific to the eradication of pests while Maintenance Service Worker performs a variety of semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance of City parks, roadways and other public areas.

Examples of Essential Duties

• Inspects trees, shrubs, grass, rights of way and other vegetation, aquatics, and structures for evidence of disease or presence of harmful pests by using visual aids, field observations and history records
• Monitors pest ecosystems for the presence of pest species, natural pest predators, and conditions that may contribute to pest problems
• Evaluates pest problems by locating and identifying pests and determines most effective and safest method for control of problems
• Applies herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, pesticides, fertilizers and other chemicals safely
• Mixes and loads chemicals according to labels and laws to be used for proper applications

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience: Three years' landscape experience including two years' experience as a professional pest control provider.

Certifications/License: A valid California Class C driver license with an acceptable driving record required by time of appointment and during course of employment
California Qualified Applicator Certificate (QAC) or Qualified Applicator License (QAL) including one or more of the following categories: Residential, Industrial and Institutional, Landscape Maintenance, Rights of Way, Forest, Aquatic, and Wood Preservation
