Position
Bridgespan is currently seeking experienced Managers for our Philanthropy Practice. Bridgespan has had the privilege to collaborate with some of the leading philanthropists and collaborative initiatives across the world–on a range of customized projects. Common types of projects include strategy development for new philanthropic efforts, sourcing and due diligence for potential investment opportunities, and portfolio supports in service of helping donors drive positive social and environmental impact after investments have been made.
The Philanthropy Manager will specialize in serving the full range of philanthropy clients at Bridgespan – from leading institutional donors to ultra-high net worth individuals to family offices. In particular, the Philanthropy Manager will likely spend at least half of their time working with the Valhalla Foundation. Valhalla is the private foundation of Scott Cook (co-founder of Intuit) and Signe Ostby; Valhalla invests in and supports innovative organizations aligned with its mission to drive measurable and meaningful improvement in outcomes that matter. For the past seven years, Bridgespan has been a strategic partner with Valhalla, providing research and strategic insight and leading sourcing and due diligence – with a particular focus on early childhood development and K-12 education in the U.S. and collaborative philanthropy efforts globally. Bridgespan’s work with Valhalla is focused on sourcing opportunities that meeting Valhalla’s investment criteria, conducting diligence on potential opportunities, providing project leadership for an annual portfolio review, and advising on new initiatives and overall strategy.
Alongside this work with Valhalla which will encompass the majority of your work, the Philanthropy Manager will lead other philanthropy clients and also have the opportunity to work on select projects in other areas of Bridgespan in order to benefit from and become familiar with the full breadth of Bridgespan’s social impact platform.
Managers who join Bridgespan often come from roles in philanthropy, strategy consultancies, public systems, etc. and join Bridgespan because of a passion to make greater social and / or environmental impact and a desire to work full time in mission-driven work and the commitment to consistently apply an equity lens to the work.
The Manager role is a senior role within the firm where Managers develop expertise in team and client management, while also developing specific thought leadership in the philanthropy field. Managers oversee the formulation and implementation of equity centered strategic recommendations to improve the performance of Bridgespan’s clients. Managers build and maintain client relationships, provide leadership and supervision across lines of difference to case team members and assume responsibility for the analytical process by which case teams create value.
Preferred location for this position is in the San Francisco office. We would consider applicants willing to travel to San Francisco monthly.
Responsibilities
Client Relationship Management
- Build and maintain strong, collaborative senior client relationships with Valhalla Directors / Senior Directors with respect to objectives, critical issues, work plan, implications, recommendations, potential risks/roadblocks, and implementation plan
- Facilitate client decision making using all modes of communication: formal and informal; written and verbal (1-on-1, small group, large group presentation)
- Develop advisory relationships with clients, as well as other sector leaders, “above and beyond” the case work issues
- Support business development efforts, which at Bridgespan tends to mean responding to inbound inquiries from investors, intermediaries, and social enterprises who seek our support
Team Leadership
- Identify and frame the most critical strategic and organizational issues facing Valhalla and other Bridgespan’s clients
- Develop and manage a team workplan to ensure the highest quality, data-driven analyses and client interactions, implementation-ready solutions
- Provide operational leadership to the case team to ensure on-time execution of key deliverables, balancing the fulfillment of team goals with the professional growth and satisfaction of individuals
- Effectively manage the formal and informal professional development of team members through skill planning, coaching, and performance feedback
Firm Contribution
- Lead and contribute to firm-building initiatives as a member of the Bridgespan management team (e.g., recruiting)
- Identify and deliver knowledge insights from case experiences that will be broadly applicable to others in the sector
- Lead the professional development of junior staff members. Participate in consensus reviews for non team members
- Contribute to the firm’s racial equity and global mindset priorities
- Serve in various ad-hoc leadership capacities (e.g., office retreat, alumni relations, and community service activities)
- Contribute to the firm’s knowledge strategy by developing and writing case studies, generating research projects from client work and serving as a subject matter resource to other case teams
Qualifications
- 6+ years of work experience, 4+ years post graduate school preferred (MBA, MPP, MPA) with at least 1 year managing a team in:
- Philanthropy, either directly (e.g., working at an institutional donor, family office, etc.) or as a
- Consultant (e.g., working at a leading strategy consulting firm serving philanthropy clients)
- Experience in early childhood or K-12 education preferred
- A track record of
- thinking critically about what it takes to achieve outcomes,
- advising senior leaders to make decisions and act in ways that deliver outstanding results
- building senior-level client relationships
- The capacity to listen to and value the views of others, even when possessing an existing point of view
- Excellent written and oral communication skills – with a focus on writing and presenting strong, succinct recommendations with appropriate supporting evidence
- The ability to analyze data and research – both quantitative and qualitative – and draw out important insights, strengths, weaknesses, and assumptions to ultimately make sound recommendations and advise others
- Experience and proficiency with addressing issues of racial equity and systemic racism and advising clients who may be at various points in their own personal and organizational work on racial equity
- The ability to effectively supervise/manage team members, including across lines of different and build inclusive team environments
- Ability to meet deadlines, often within very tight timeframes
