Duties

Major Duties will consist of but not limited to:

  • Install, modify, and repair new and existing high-pressure piping systems and equipment such as steam heating, steam generation, and hydraulic systems, steam generators, water tanks, flash and expansion tanks, condensate, vacuum, and circulating pumps, and radiators.
  • Install, modify, and repair systems by setting up system routes, placing and cutting route openings, placing hangers for proper pitch and elevation, and determining and installing risers, flexible branches, expansion joints, pumps, gauges, and pressure regulators in the combination needed to support the pressures of the systems and that ensure the proper operation of the systems.
  • Install equipment by planning and completing the routing and placement of systems leading to the equipment, determining and placing the equipment at the proper levels and points in the systems, and joining, sealing, and testing systems and equipment for proper pressures, leak-free joints, and operation.
  • Install, modify, and repair new and existing utility, supply, and disposal systems and equipment such as sewage, water, oil, and gas distribution systems, and water closets, tubs, and showers
  • Install, modify, and repair systems by locating and tapping main lines, setting up system routes, placing and cutting route openings, placing hangers for proper level and slope, and determining and installing valves, traps, and unions needed for proper operation of systems.
  • Repair, maintain and make adjustments to plumbing equipment such as drinking fountains, whirlpool baths, lavatories, dishwashing machines, glass and silverware washing machines, garbage disposal units, toilets, sewers and other similar equipment.
  • Repair and keep in good working order outside water, sewer drainage and gas distribution systems (systems are composed of cast iron pipe with both mechanical and lead joints, copper, black steel, terra-cotta, and concrete pipe).
  • Work from building plans, blueprints, and sketches to plan and lay out the routing, placement, pitch, elevation, pressure reduction, expansion, and operation of various piping systems and equipment.
  • Use knowledge of pipefitting terminology to complete assignments as instructed in work orders.
  • Develop modifications to instructions and specifications on the basis of practical operating experience.
  • Use shop mathematics to lay out angles, arcs, and circles.
  • Figure pipe, joint, and valve sizes needed to support pressures of systems.
  • Align pipes, valves, fittings, and joints for accurate match.
  • Install proper braces and supports to control movement and vibration and allow for expansion and contraction.
  • Operate a sewer cleaning machine in proper maintenance of waste systems both interior and exterior.
  • Use tools and equipment such as sliding squares, measuring tapes, dividers, chalk lines, plumb bobs, templates, star drills, grinders, flanges, hand and power pipe threaders and cutters, and pipe wrenches.
  • Set up and operate machine tools such as small lathes, milling machines, drill presses, and precision grinders to manufacture component parts or re-machine existing parts such as bushings, bearings, seals, couplings, and pistons.
  • Traces and troubleshoots pipelines, systems, and equipment to locate and repair leaks and trouble spots

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:
Heavy lifting and carrying (45+ pounds), Straight and hand over hand pulling and pushing (up to 4 hours), reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, both hands required. Walking, standing, crawling, and kneeling (up to 8 hours). Repeated bending, climbing (while using arms and legs), both legs required, operation of crane, truck, tractor or motor vehicle. Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4, far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other, both eyes required. Depth perception, Ability to distinguish basic colors, ability to distinguish shades of colors, hearing (aid may be permitted).

The work is done inside and outside, and is usually dirty, dusty, and greasy. The pipefitters are sometimes required to make installations and repairs in areas where bad smelling fumes are present. There is frequent exposure to the possibility of uncomfortable heat conditions. The pipefitters are frequently exposed to the possibility of strains, cuts, scrapes, bruises, burns, and infections. They are occasionally exposed to the possibility of broken bones and exposure to hazardous materials. Incumbent will be subject to the hazards normally encountered in the trades work. Incumbent must be able to work during any emergency repair day or night, and work long hours until such job is accomplished or service to the medical center has been adequately restored.
