Duties
Planner I
Reviews land development applications relative to Zoning, Subdivision, Landscaping and Telecommunication Regulations.- Reviews building permit applications for zoning compliance. May investigate zoning complaints and act as a witness on zoning violations. Reviews variance and special exception permit applications. May assist in zoning and annexation work. Prepares and posts notice of public hearings.
- May analyze and prepare demographic, socioeconomic, land development, and infrastructure data.
- Confers with other departments, citizens, civic leaders, neighborhood groups, developers, real estate agencies and engineers regarding development proposals with oversight from the senior planning manager.
- Uses permit tracking software to track land development cases and to prepare reports.
- Performs all other related duties as assigned.
Planner II
- Reviews development proposals for compliance with the Comprehensive Plan and development regulations pertaining to zoning, subdivision, parking and landscaping. Acts as case manager on new commercial project applications.
- Reviews building permit applications and engineering civil plans for zoning compliance. Investigates zoning complaints and is a witness on zoning violations. Reviews variance and special exception permit applications. May assist in annexation work. Prepares and posts notice of public hearings.
- Conducts extensive research in specific or general project areas. Writes, or assists in writing, regulations relating to land development and updates guiding documents, i.e. the Comprehensive Plan.
- Assumes project management and design role for major planning initiatives and special projects to implement the city goals, including overseeing work of consultants, conferring with other departments, citizens, civic leaders, neighborhood groups, developers, real estate agencies and engineers.
- Uses permit tracking software to track land development cases and to prepare reports.
- Performs all other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
REQUIRED:
Planner I (Yearly Salary: $53,854 - $67,318 DOQ)
- Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or institution in Planning, Architecture, Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience in GIS, and the full suite of Microsoft Office products.
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record (must obtain TX driver’s license within 90 days).

An equivalent combination of education, experience, certification and/or licenses sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
Planner II ( Yearly Salary: $66,699 - $83,374 DOQ)
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or institution in Planning, Landscape Architecture, Architecture, Engineering, or a related field.
- Three years related experience in a professional level Urban Design and/or Urban Planning role.
- Experience in GIS, permit tracking software, and Microsoft Office suite and Adobe products.
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record (must obtain TX driver’s license within 90 days).

An equivalent combination of education, experience, certification and/or licenses sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
PREFERRED:
- Prior municipal government experience.
- Master’s Degree from an accredited college or institution in Planning, Landscape Architecture, Architecture, Engineering, or a related field.
- AICP Certification.
Additional Information
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Effective written and oral communication skills. Skills in research and statistical methods. Ability to read and interpret maps. Knowledge of development review practices and planning practices. Ability to get along appropriately with co-workers and the public. Knowledge of GIS and permit tracking software skills.
Attendance is an essential function of this position. The City reserves the right to require an employee in this position to work more than 40 hours a week. This position provides services or performs duties for the benefit of the general public during emergency situations. These may include services or duties different from those performed in the usual course and scope of your job. In the event of an evacuation, the incumbent in this position may be required to remain to perform needed services.
