Job Description

The lab of Eli Vlaisavljevich, Ph.D., in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Mechanics at Virginia Tech, is hiring a postdoctoral associate fellow to perform cutting edge research related to focused ultrasound transducers and histotripsy and non-invasive ablation.
The selected postdoctoral associate will specifically bring their talents, knowledge, and creativity to work on the following projects:
  • Development of hardware and software for custom Focused Ultrasound (FUS) transducers and electronic driving systems for various ongoing histotripsy projects, with an initial focus on the development of a histotripsy system for the non-invasive treatment of bone tumors.
  • Investigation of histotripsy methods for the precise and non-invasive ablation of musculoskeletal tumors (soft tissue sarcoma, osteosarcoma).
  • Development of FUS ablation devices and novel ultrasound imaging feedback methods for the treatment of musculoskeletal cancers in veterinary patients.

The candidate would work closely with an interdisciplinary team of engineers, scientists, veterinarians, and clinicians on the development of these new FUS technologies. We are seeking motivated, creative individuals interested in working within a team environment on projects ranging from early-stage technology development to pre-clinical trials in small and large animals, including ongoing veterinary clinical trials. Candidates should be comfortable approaching challenging problems and working independently or in small interdisciplinary teams with graduate and undergraduate students. The candidate should have experience working with veterinary patients and mentoring students from diverse research backgrounds. Lastly, the postdoctoral associate will assist in the development of research plans, research tasks, and the writing of grant proposals for federal agencies and non-profit sponsors. The postdoctoral associate will also be expected to submit of peer-reviewed manuscripts and coordinate activities involving a number of project members.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. training in biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or other closely related fields. PhD must be awarded no more than four years prior to the effective date of appointment with a minimum of one year eligibility remaining.
  • Research experience (academic or industry) in areas related to these research projects such as FUS transducer design, ultrasound physics, phased-array transducers, and image-guided cancer ablation
  • Experience working with large animal oncology research studies or veterinary oncology programs.
  • Exhibit excellent critical thinking, scholarly ability, and good communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience mentoring students from diverse research backgrounds, including engineering and veterinary students
  • Highly motivated in conducting research, producing scholarly publications, assisting in submission of relevant grant proposals.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced research environment.
  • Good publication track and sound technical writing.
