This hourly arrangement will safely and efficiently operate, monitor and maintain coal-fired, gas-fired, or oil-fired high pressure Hot Water or Steam Boilers, chillers, related support and auxiliary equipment and systems according to all applicable Federal, State, and local Regulations. Provide supervision, support, training and guidance to the inmate work force performing routine daily tasks, corrective maintenance procedures and plant operations. Provides continuous, reliable hot water and/or steam flow to the Institution in a safe and efficient manner. Serves as essential personnel.

There are four (4) wage positions available. These wage position will support power plant operations at one of the following locations:
  • Sussex Power Plant located at Sussex I & Sussex II State Prisons Complex (Five gas/oil-fired high-pressure Steam boilers, Three 770 ton Chillers)


  • Powhatan Power Plant located at State Farm Correctional Complex (Three fuel/oil-fired high-pressure Steam boilers)

  • VCCW
    Power Plant located at Va Correctional Center for Women (Three coal-fired Hot Water boilers)

This is a wage position limited to working no more than 1,500 hours per agency during the 12-month period of May 1 – April 30, regardless of the hire date. The wage employment period resets on May 1 of the following year. All wage employees are limited to working no more than 29 hours per week on average over the 12-month period. This wage position offers no state benefits.

Minimum Qualifications
Valid driver’s license. Knowledge in the use of hand tools, electricaland pneumatic power tools and equipment. The ability toread and follow written procedures and prioritize workassignments. Demonstrated ability to communicateeffectively orally, electronically and in writing.

Preferred Qualifications
High school diploma or GED equivalent preferred. Plumbing and electrical experience preferred. Prefer training and experience in boiler operation, maintenance, and repair. Prefer working knowledge of hot water or steam boiler operation, water treatment chemistry, and all associated auxiliary equipment preferred. Prefer State certified Boiler Operator License. Prefer general maintenance experience. Prefer plumbing and electrical experience. Prefer the ability to troubleshoot, analyze and repair equipment as necessary. Be able to use Time & Attendance software/programs. Heavy equipment operation. Prefer experience with computer programs such as MS Office (Word, Excel), internet, web based applications, and timekeeping applications/software.

Special Requirements
All applicants are subject to a background investigation and those applying to a designated safety sensitive position are subject to a pre-employment drug screen.
