JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Principal’s Engineer’s primary role is to utilize engineering knowledge, skills, and related experience to provide the company an efficient means of transferring ideas into reality through complex analytical design and analysis.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Design:
  • Utilizes engineering resources to execute project plans.
  • Perform and directs engineering calculations, FEA, or other analysis when appropriate.
  • Works with engineering resources on conceptualization of machine design and analyzes/selects materials and processes.
  • Performs and directs component and machine cost analysis.
  • Researches and understands the applicable industry and government standards (CE, UL, etc.)
  • Assists with the creation of models and drawings in the appropriate CAD software.
  • Utilizes developed advanced analytical design and analysis skills to support product development.

Documentation:
  • Researches and understands the requirements of appropriate manufacturing standards for components, subassemblies, and machines.
  • Supports the creation of machine documentation (manuals, labels, literature)
  • Produces and reviews drawings, performs bolted joint design, tolerance stack-up, geometric tolerances, FMEAs, and hazard analysis.
  • Creates FEA documentation.
  • Creates and presents monthly project updates for executive team.
  • Ensures ISO requirements for projects area met.

Product Support:
  • Provides production support through quality notifications and deviations.
  • Improves product line warranty rate and resolves customer quality issues.
  • Is the primary engineering contact for product line.

Product Testing:
  • In collaboration with Research & Development, creates test plans and sets testing priorities.
  • Evaluates results and determines/coordinates appropriate engineering action.
  • Works with Research & Development to ensure product is in compliance with appropriate standards, certifications and regulations.

Communication:
  • Effectively communicates on a technical and non-technical level with members of other departments, suppliers and outside design houses and consultants.
  • Speaks at various technical forums.

Project Management:
  • Leads the design team, cross-functional departments and suppliers to ensure projects meet the time line, project cost, performance, quality, and safety requirements.
  • Is the technical leader for product line.

Safety:
  • Performs all job functions is a safe manner and maintains safety awareness.
  • Reports known accidents, injuries and unsafe practices and/or conditions to supervisor.


REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering is required. A Master’s Degree and Professional Engineer Certificate is preferred.
  • A minimum of 10 years of design engineering experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably related to construction or other mobile equipment. Twelve (12) years of experience is preferred.
  • Proficient FEA skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong conflict resolution and problem solving skills.
  • Proficient computer skills including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND/OR WORK ENVIRONMENT:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to use a keyboard, calculator, and telephone. Frequent sitting, talking, hearing, and occasionally stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, lift (20 lbs.), and an ability to adjust vision for close vision work. May involve the use of hand and power tools. Requires occasional exposure to running machines and their subsystems including engines, drive trains, burners, electric circuits, and hydraulics. May involve occasional exposure to hot or cool, wet and sometimes dusty and loud conditions. May require the use of a dust mask, hearing, foot, and eye protection and other personal protective equipment.
