POSITION: PROFESSIONAL ACADEMIC STUDENT SUCCESS
ADVISOR: OFFICE OF ACADEMIC ENGAGEMENT (GREER)

North Greenville University is seeking a Professional Academic Student Success Advisor
(PASS ADVISOR) to join our NGU Online program. A PASS Advisor partners with online
students upon their acceptance into the program and remains the students’ primary contact
throughout enrollment in their program. Information and assistance will be provided to the
student along a wide range of domains, including academic advising, mentoring, general
student services, and educational coaching. The PASS Advisor works closely with the NGU E-
Learning Center, Admissions, Student Success, NGU Central, Registrar’s Office, and Online
Program Coordinators to assist in ensuring that students will have a smooth transition from
acceptance to enrolling and advancing in their studies. Proactive strategies are utilized to
provide individualized approach and support to assist struggling students in navigating
challenges and reaching graduation.

The PASS Advisor reports to the Associate Provost for Academic Engagement. This position is
a twelve-month administrative staff position.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Connect with the assigned students within specified timeframes to introduce the success

coaching process and establish a proactive and supportive foundation for building
relationship that will be maintained throughout the student’s educational journey.

  • Assess Transcripts of potential students to aid in the admissions process.
  • Ensure that students are provided with an individualized learning plan that identifies

resources for managing areas of challenge and concern, and timely next steps required
to reach agreed upon academic goals.

  • Contact new students to encourage them from the start of the program; inform them of

resources available—Utilize the early matriculation terms to train students to own their
educational processes.

  • Develop and keep updated needed communication materials for students about the

student life cycle and processes.

  • Walk students through the functionality of Blackboard, Smarthinking services, and NGU

Library online resources.

  • Create and implement strategies to identify and support academically at-risk students.
  • Monitor student academic progress and communicate with each student at regularly

scheduled times; intervening as appropriate to assist those students having difficulty.

  • Serve as a liaison between students, faculty and Student Services (and others as

needed) to ensure satisfactory progress towards graduation.

  • Respond to students’ needs, ensuring that barriers to success are identified and

addressed.

  • Work closely with the Admissions Office, Registrar’s Office, and Student Success Office

to assist with enrollment and retention goals.

  • Contact at-risk students regularly throughout the term to discuss academic strategies

and issues the student is dealing with in regard to coursework and academic progress.

  • Issues to discuss during coaching sessions may include:

o Time management
o Study skills
o Study environment
o Problem skill areas that may need tutoring (refer to Smarthinking)
o Plagiarism (may recommend taking Plagiarism Workshop & refer papers for
review through Smarthinking’s Writing Center)

  • Monitor weekly attendance and provide assistance to students as needed.
  • Collect and record data regarding the reasons students stop attending classes or

withdraw from the University.

  • The PASS Advisor is expected to follow all NGU guidelines regarding student

confidentiality including FERPA.

  • The PASS Advisor will send encouraging emails to follow up on action plans created

during the coaching meetings as needed.

  • Encouraged to pray with the students and encourage them spiritually.
  • Required to have specific “office hours” for students to contact on a weekly basis to

discuss any issues or ask for prayer.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Minimum of 1 year of professional experience in advising, counseling, student services,

human services, or related field

  • Committed Christian willing to pray for students
  • Solid oral and written communication skills and the ability to utilize multiple

communication methods including email, text, phone, Teams, face-to-face, etc.

  • Demonstrated customer service skills.
  • Ability to use an array of technological tools including Jenzabar, Microsoft Office, Social

Networking, etc.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Professional experience in a higher education setting.
  • Master’s degree in appropriate field which may include higher education, counseling,

student affairs or related field.

  • Experience with Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software, Blackboard

Learning System, Smarthinking, and student information systems.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Hearing: Hear well enough to communicate with students, visitors, co-workers, and

vendors—sometimes though a digital medium

  • Dexterity: Grasping, feeling, writing, type and use the telephone, copier, and computer

systems

  • Mobility: stand for long periods of time; walk, while carrying recruiting materials; move

between departments and attend meetings across campus

  • Talking: Frequently convey detailed, accurate, and important information in a manner

that can be clearly understood

  • Lifting, Pulling, and Pushing: Exert up to 40 pounds of force occasionally
  • Cognitive/Emotional: Ability to critically think and concentrate. Must be able to adapt and

respond quickly to the needs of students, students’ families, and co-workers**

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
This position requires good team relationship skills and must be willing to take direction. The
position will collaborate with many departments across campus, but reports to the Associate
Provost of Academic Engagement.

WORK SCHEDULE
Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., and Friday 8:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. Summer
hours may vary. Office hours are subject to change as deemed necessary. Occasional work on
Saturdays and evenings is required.

TRAVEL
At this time, no required travel outside of the area. Some travel to Tigerville for training, errands
or routine meetings is required.
