AFFOA is a non-profit, public-private partnership founded in 2016 as one of the Department of Defense (DoD) funded Manufacturing USA Innovation Institutes. Headquartered in Cambridge, MA, AFFOA’s mission is to rekindle the textiles industry by leading a nationwide enterprise for advanced fiber & fabric technology and manufacturing innovation, enabling revolutionary new system capabilities for commercial and defense applications. AFFOA is uniquely positioned to establish and build supply chains to rapidly prototype for DoD and commercial needs while also focusing on preparing and building the workforce of the future that can support these new manufacturing needs. AFFOA partners with its member companies including startups, universities, manufacturers, commercial industry, and defense partners to bring advanced functional fabric technologies to market.
E-textiles and Advanced Functional Fibers and Fabrics is an emerging field. AFFOA’s Proposal and Technical Writer will effectively convey the importance of AFFOA’s mission and research and development work to government proposal awarding and project sponsor audiences. The successful candidate will be responsible for producing the highest quality written technical documents that are also clear, succinct, and readily understood by a general audience for funding applications and publications. The Writer will own the full scope of activities required to conceptualize, prepare, and deliver grant proposals to DoD and other government agencies. The Writer will also be responsible for developing, in conjunction with technical writers, white papers, publishable documents, and externally technical briefs. The Proposal and Technical Writer will work with an interdisciplinary team to assess thought leadership writing needs as well as support the Primary Investigators as they interface with Funding Agencies. This position reports to the Director of Government Programs.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with business professionals, technologists, and scientists to develop, write, and revise research and prototype grant proposals for DoD and other appropriate funding agencies
  • Work with technologists and scientists to architect, write, and edit publishable works; -, such as external briefs and white papers
  • Work with business development team to produce publishable works such as press releases and thought leadership articles
  • Provide constructive feedback and editing support on writing projects to improve clarity, logic, and persuasiveness of written works
  • Advise colleagues on best strategies to convey significance, impact, and innovations
  • Maintain and manage documents, tracking, and version control methods
  • Develop, maintain, and manage brand-voiced descriptions of AFFOA’s capabilities, projects, Q&As, and applications
  • Design a strategy to craft a responsive, impactful application and work with the application PIs to implement this strategy in the form of grant proposals
  • Curate and/or develop materials on proposal and technical writing for colleagues
  • Assist with other duties associated with AFFOA’s strategic growth, as needed

Skills and Qualifications

  • Exceptional verbal and written communications skills; effectively communicate across departments, documents, and programs
  • Strong emotional intelligence and passion for building relationships across all levels of an organization
  • Ability to understand broad content of proposed research, articulate a compelling project rationale, establish timelines, and drive best practices for proposal development
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Strategize and collaborate as an integral member of the proposal team
  • Comfortable with a rapid iterative methodology for producing high quality work product
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with investigators
  • Thrive in a growth-oriented, nimble environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • BS in a technical or engineering discipline
  • Experience preparing BAA, SBIR, STTR grant proposals and/or experience with other funding mechanisms
  • Strong portfolio of writing and editing for both scientific expert and lay audiences
  • Expertise and track record of compliance with all requirements of specific grant competitions
