Changing Lives, Saving Lives

About us: Provident was founded in 1860 and has been helping those in need ever since. First established to address homelessness and feed the hungry, our mission has adapted to the needs of our community over time. We rebranded to Provident Behavioral Health in 2019 to underscore that all client services are delivered with the vision and commitment of being the leader in providing exemplary behavioral health services. We advocate for the most vulnerable and underserved in the greater St. Louis community and our mission – building brighter futures through exceptional behavioral health services, especially for those with the greatest need – drives us to provide access to services to anyone in need.

This is a new role that we are so excited about! The Mental Health Registered Nurse (MHRN) will primarily work alongside Provident’s Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNP) in the Psychiatric Services department at Provident. Also known as the Psychiatric RN, you will assist adult and youth clients with behavioral health issues seeking psychiatric services. The role will work out of one or more Provident office sites in the St. Louis metro area. This position will also serve as a member of the agency’s Safety Team.

What makes this role so unique and fascinating, and why you will especially love it, is that you will also spend 20% of your time at Provident’s Mary Ryder Home, an Intensive Residential Treatment Setting (IRTS) to provide oversight and coordination of nursing and medical protocols and individual needs. The IRTS program houses 5 to 16 older adult women with chronic and persistent mental illnesses. Work hours are Monday through Friday and align with Psychiatric Services department hours when clients are seen (between 7:30 AM and 8:00 PM). Hours on-site at Mary Ryder Home will also fall between Monday and Friday during normal Provident business hours. And remember, there will be NO overnight or weekend hours required.

What you’ll do:

  • Work with youth (ages 5+), adult, and older adult clients presenting with behavioral health issues
  • Provide client education and assist with the assessment process
  • Measure vital signs such as manual or electronic blood pressure and pulse, height, weight, waist circumference, and temperature; record information in the client’s Electronic Health Record (EHR), and immediately notify PMHNP of any out of normal ranges
  • Conduct medication reconciliation to gather all current prescribed and over-the-counter medications/supplements a client is currently taking and enter information in the client’s EHR
  • Interview clients, gather and note/enter any changes in their health history and pharmacy, ensure an accurate list of all current OTC and prescribed medications/vitamins/supplements and allergies, and inquire and note/enter the pregnancy/nursing status for all female clients
  • Manage medication refill requests and call in refills, as appropriate and approved by PMHNP
  • Obtain and complete preauthorization from insurance companies for medications prescribed by PMHNP
  • Coordinate ordering and obtaining results from lab work and genetic testing for clients
  • Interpret lab results and communicate results to PMHNPs
  • Utilize clinical judgments to address client medication questions and issues, consulting with PMHNPs as needed
  • Review medical records and medication administration entries for Mary Ryder Home residents
  • Provide training to Mary Ryder Home staff on medication-related practices and best practices for caring for residents with behavioral health needs
  • Evaluate psychiatric services provided to determine appropriate CPT coding to maximize billing efficiency and accuracy
  • Coordinate client care: scheduling appointments, linking with referrals, responding to client phone calls, scheduling follow-up services, coordinating discharge planning, and communicating with pharmacies and insurance companies
  • Provide referrals and link clients with additional services that support their treatment plan (i.e. Counseling, physical health screening, psychological testing)
  • Record all services performed for accurate billing for services provided in compliance with all local, state, and federal laws, as well as payor rules and regulations

What we need you to have:

  • Current Licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) in Missouri
  • Nursing Degree (Associate’s or Bachelor’s level) from an accredited school of nursing
  • Experience taking vitals (height, weight, blood pressure, and temperature) and charting in electronic health records
  • Experience in a behavioral health setting (inpatient, residential, intensive outpatient, or outpatient)
  • Must be able to lift up to 50lbs
  • Reliable transportation to work at Provident’s multiple office locations
  • Patience, positive attitude, friendly demeanor, and great customer service
  • A team player and a person that can multi-task, with a willingness for continuous learning
  • Must possess the ability to express empathy while managing client needs for expediency
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Time and project management skills

What we would like to you have:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in nursing from an accredited school of nursing
  • Medical Billing & Coding certification or training
  • Coursework or training in mental illness and behavioral health issues
  • Experience completing medication preauthorization with insurance companies
  • Medical billing and coding experience
