PT Lab Assistant - Topp Lab Job at Donald Danforth Plant Science Center
The laboratory of Dr. Christopher Topp at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center is a plant root phenomics lab, innovating uses of 3D imaging modalities to investigate roots and their environment. We are seeking a highly-motivated individual for a part-time (up to 29 hours/week) Laboratory Assistant position. The successful candidate for this position will have strong communication skills, a desire to learn new things, great ability to complete tasks with high quality in a timely manner, and outstanding collaborative capability.
Some of the responsibilities for this role include general lab duties such as basic lab upkeep and media preparation. Greenhouse and field work will also be needed on a regular basis. Keep in mind that this position will involve working in hot field conditions over the summer season and potentially some field work during late fall and early spring months.
Responsibilities
- Process, clean, and harvest samples for image analysis
- Assist in the construction of large-scale experimental systems
- Assist the research team in planting, spraying, harvesting, weeding, preparing seeds, maintaining fields, tissue sampling, digging roots and other similar activities in the field and greenhouse as needed
- Greenhouse/Growth Chamber care and management of maize, oryza, pennycress, hemp, and other plants for crossing and bulking
- Experience growing plants in aseptic media
- Other tasks as needed, including X-ray CT, optical imaging of plants, gel preparation and general laboratory upkeep
- Other duties as assigned
Required Skills and Abilities
- Willing to work within a team setting
- Ability to manage a variety of tasks within the working hours
- Enthusiastic about field, greenhouse, and agronomic research
- Ability to perform basic data entry and analysis, as well as demonstrate good recordkeeping and communication skills
- Special consideration will be given to individuals with molecular biology, plant care or computational experience

- Associate’s degree in a relevant research area or high school education, experience in a lab setting a plus
