Public Works Crew Member I

The City of Abbeville is currently accepting applications for a Public Works Crew MemberI.

Duties of this position include, but are not limited to:

• Picks up curb-side garbage and recycling and deposits garbage and recycling in collection trucks; assists in disposal at landfills.
• Cleans and maintains collection vehicles and related equipment requiring the use of small hand tools; operates truck on a relief or fill-in basis.
• Utilizes shovels, rakes, and protective clothing in the performance of duties.
• Assists with garbage collection at special events for the City.
• Operates or monitors operation of machinery and equipment such as dump trucks, lawn mowers, weed eaters, saws, hand tools, mechanic tools, blowers, shovels, etc.
• Reviews work orders to plan grass cuttings.
• Exercises care in performance of general street maintenance tasks such as raking and cleaning behind boom truck, painting traffic lanes, etc.
• Will be required to work in other areas of the department as needed such as the sanitation truck and boom truck.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

• High school graduate or equivalent, with six to eleven months of experience in street/sidewalk/sanitation/ maintenance/collection preferred, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must possess a valid South Carolina driver's license.
• Knowledge of proper and safe use of machinery, equipment and tools necessary for assignment completion.
• CDL preferred or obtain CDL within six months of start date.
• Ability to perform manual work requiring some physical strength and agility and work required on work orders.
• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with the public and fellow staff members.
• Valid South Carolina driver's license with a good driving record.
• Must pass a thorough background investigation, pre-employment drug screen and physical examination.

(City of Abbeville employees receive 14 Paid Holidays each year and begin accruing 12 General Leave PTO Days per year with the number of PTO Days accruing annually increasing with tenure.)
